One more thing. I've seen the 8272CL advertised on ebay as Unlocked in one listing, but not in any other listings or elsewhere. Is this likely true? and if so does that apply to all Xeon CL 2nd gen chips or even OEM chips in general?

bxxlshit: there is no unlocked 2nd gen scalable, not even an ES chip.

if that 37% benchmark for the 8-DIMM config applies.

note there are only 6 channels(ABCDEF), two channels(A,D) have two DIMM slots.
if you populate each channel with same memory capacity you get 6 channel balanced configuration.

FYI the 4x4x4x4 PCIe bifurcation option in bios works well. I have 2 Crucial P5 Plus nvme drives now connected in software RAID 0 scratch drive using mdadm (Linux). Getting ~7GB/s Read, 4GB/s write, around double compared to single nvme. Using this adapter card off Amazon: 4 x nvme pcie.
Anyone looked at Intel hardware VROC RAID? I believe it needs to be used with Intel's own nvme drives, which look a bit slow compared to latest drives.

Slightly jealous of those cheap prices on the 8259CL, 8272CL parts, would love those extra cores. But I need that extra PCIe1 16x slot from W-32xx series processors for multi GPU setup. Higher core count W series still priced in $000's

I can not get any 128/256/512GB Optane DCPMM to work with this board. Bios sees them but sets any unit into 'unmanageable'. At the same time the remaining ram sticks are running in 4-channel mode with A1 + D1 disabled. If you remove Optanes, it's back to 6-channel mode. All Optane modules work on other motherboards. So there's no defect.

@NablaSquaredG ... thx for pointing me to the NVDimm jumper. I read the 2T manual and ignored the NVDimm jumper before. The Optane modules still don't work with the NVDimm jumper set. NVDimm-P's I have here do work with the jumper set. So there must be something else.

Specs on Asrock website mentioned Optanes shall work. Here, they don't.

correct, there is no switch,
platin 8259CL = 48 PCIe lanes (and other scalables)
Xeon W-32xx = 64 PCIe lanes

QQVT should be B1 (same than production)
all 2nd gen ES/QS work, but no skylake ES with stock BIOS.

Thanks for your answer, afaik those QS are equal as production units in this case? I need to buy a proc for it between 100-200€ and dunno what to do (don't need a lot of cores for this "server") any recomendation?

I was attracted to the -NL eBay offer, but worried about what other functionality might be flaky, given the early/premature BIOS.

Your solution encouraged me to buy one. The PCIe slot configurability [3x (x16x0 | x8x8)] and the option of (2x) NVMe-x4 or 4xSATA. both very appealing. Still awaiting arrival of CPU (6132 initially) and cooler (Noctua NH-D9). Hoping that Murphy gets distracted from attending my bench-test ...
