I have been using a LSI 9211-8i SAS controller in my ASRock Extreme 4 based desktop machine fine until the motherboards untimely death. I went out and grabbed a MSI B75A-G43 Gaming board as a replacement which has 2x PCIe x16 slots, one running at X16 (for video card) and one running at x4.

To my surprise the LSI 9211-8i is not detected in the x4 slot at all but is in the x16 slot.

I can drop one of my SSDs and go back to just the motherboard slots and use the card in my servers but I was also planning to use it in an x4 slot in my DL380 G6 if that was the case and it would need to go in a x4 slot.

Anyone had issues with a LSI 9211-8i (or other type) not working in x4 slots or only working in some x4 slots ?.

Thanks

Rinblock,

I have a 9211-8i working in a x4 slot in IT mode for a user. We put it in a physical x4 slot using a card extension cable that I dremeled out the back so the card would fit.

So yes, it recognizes and is usable in a x4 :)

I had a similar issue with my ASRock Fatal1ty Z77-M board
It has 2x PCIe 16x slots which are 8x with 2 cards and the M1015 in IT mode would work happily in either.
But for the life of me, it refused to work in the PCIe 4x slot (16x physical)
Just wondering as the 4x PCIe lanes are coming from the PCH not the CPU, this could be the issue

The board we were using was a Tyan S7025 workstation where we used up all the x16s for GPUs, a x8 for an LSI 9271 and the x4 for an IBM 1015 flashed to a 9211 in IT mode.

Looks like the x4 is from the PCH and not direct to the CPU, might have something to do with it? (at least I think thats how its wired on B series, C series and maybe Q? can enable another 4 2.0 from cpu)
I've not had problems with cpu based lanes but PCH ones have ignored some of my NICs before.

The 4 vs 1/8/16 should be a non issue with LSI 2008 cards, had them detected in x1 slots and the chip spec lists all lanes compatible.

Thanks for the replies.

So it should work fine in the DL 380 G6 x4 slots which is good.

The card has the IR firmware by the looks of it. Wondering if that may be contributing but not holding my breath on that one.
