I am curious does anybody run windows on these systems and therefor find the best value at 16,24(dual socket only),32 core options ?

"It depends"
For my homelab and current setup I need 16 core licenses per server, 16 cores would be the best choice to take full advantage of the windows license.
At work/customers datacenter we use usually have 4 or 8 core vms because the other software is far more expensive per core than the windows license. (That's were the F skus come in handy :D)

Oh yes of course below 16 cores :) licensing for DB’s etc. was just more wondering about the big systems. I know windows license is a small part of cost but in my work if you had a few thousand not optimally licensed severs it adds up for sure.

That's where companies use the datacenter edition of windows server. You get enough licenses (1 license per 16 cores) for the (vm) host and can create as many vms with these licenses as your hardware supports.

Oh I get that, have thousands of ESX servers (and Hyper-V and KVM as well)
My point was;
2 x 24 core = 1 base datacenter license + 2 x 16 core extra
2 x 28 core = 1+3 license but you waste 8 cores

Wasn’t sure if people cared or not, for use we tend to use 2x16-core for small serves, 2x24-core for larger ones. Only in specific cases does it make sense to go more cores in the big clusters.
