9500 8i Config Problems?

Purchased a new 9500 8i to use with a HP 12GB SAS ( HP / 727253-001) 36 port expander. Updated HBA to FW to latest version, 27, updated win 11 drivers to latest on broadcom site. Cant really do much with the expander firwmare, above my skillset and I dont have a HP server to flash it with. When plugging the 9500 into the expander I loose two ports, however if I use a SAS2 2308 based HBA I get all 7 Usable ports, and can see all 28 drives without problems.

So Ive instead plugged the 9500 8i directly into a backplane with a slimsas to 2xSFF 8087 cable. All 8 drives are recognized, however they are not passing any monitoring info such as SMART/Temp ect data through to my monitoring software. Other than that I can use all drives without any issue. This is making me wonder if I just need to change a configuration setting or something that will at least pass through SMART data, and perhaps that will fix the expander issue as well. Thanks for any assistance.
