I would say no.

X8 is getting really old, and these dual E5506 will even together be SLOWER even with multi core computing than a Dell R210 II with a quad-core E3-1240v2 and 16GB ram which can often be found for just $200.

This one does not even have IPMI, and the power usage idle is around 100 watt. Full load around 250-300 watt. The Dell R210 II is 22 watt idle, and 100 watt full load.

If people are interested in X8's for some reason PM me, I have a stack of X8DT3 boxes with 2x E5506's and 12G of memory in 4U SM chassis w/rails I have been meaning to write up a post for over in the for sale side but not yet gotten around to it.
The chassis are 743-TQ something as I recall (8x 3.5" hot-swap, individual connectors) with redundant power and rail sets. I have IPMI cards for most of them. If interest I will go over to storage and pull some out of the stack and get more details. Probably have 8-12 of them total.

We needed them to fit some full height, full length PCI cards for a special project back in the day hence the physically large configuration for something that isn't super-powerful. I expect the chassis are worth more than the mobo/cpu/mem combo, they are just expensive to ship.

Actually 743-TQ chassises are very interesting! I need a GPU farm, and 1080 TI are always full height. Question is, are the PSU's capable for 4 of these GPUs? I think they consume 150w each when I train with Cuda. But if I can manage 3 GPU's I think that will be okey too.

I'll head over to storage this weekend and get some pics & specs. There was a PWS-801-1R on the shelf that was pulled from one of the servers as a spare and I think most are configured with similar power supplies, but there are a slew of SM ones over the years that fit into the same package.
For GPU use I don't know off-hand what the power distribution board is rated at and the cable harness looks like behind the pair of supplies so I will see what I can get for part #s etc and let you know.

I had some running in the basement in the past before moving to x9 based servers to save power and size, I wouldn't consider them as something to run in the same room as you without some mods as they are more noisy that I would want to deal with all the time.

Not to steal @Blinky 42 s thunder but I have 2 of these with 12 GB ram too that I have been meaning to unload. So anyone interested PM me once his stock is depleted.

ECC or non-ECC?
CSE-743TQ or SC-743-TQ?

I am possibly interested as well depending on price and shipping to San Jose, CA. =)
