Seagate would need to give me enough drives to fill my array, on the understanding that they would only be paid for after they are out of warranty +1 year, until that point I would consider the disks faulty. They would also have to give me a bod to come round and babysit any array rebuild necessary due to a bad disk and guarantee to pay me what "I feel" my data is worth, should the array be lost as a result of one of their duffers screwing the pooch :)

If Seagate are up to the challenge....I'm all ears :D

Actually, to get back on topic, I have purchased around 200 of these refurb 3TB HGST disks, both this model and the earlier one, over the last 2 years for myself and others. I have yet to see a single disk cough or sneeze never mind fail. I personally feel that you simply can't beat the cost of them for bulk storage on a budget. I'm expecting at least another couple of years out of them trouble free before considering an upgrade, and I would lay a bet that there's a good few more years in them after that point. I think that a lot of these bad disks being shipped by the egg et al, is actually down to bad handling on their part, and those of the shipper, rather than the refurb house :)

I ended up ordering 9 of these hgst's from Go HDD,

Currently in the proccess of Badblocks. Was 30+hrs in on badblocks when one of my ram sticks decided it wanted to crash the system.. [Pisses me off as I did run mem check on the system a while ago.

anyways I did a short and a long smart test before I started badblocks. During the first session before the crash I got a warning about one of the drives. after the reboot I pulled the smart results then started badblocks again. Seems Da6 & 7 are jacked. The Power on hours reported also has me a bit worried. The results are showing 47hrs which I suspect it was only 5-10hrs of POH from when I received them. Either Go HDD manipulated the hrs, I got essentialy New drives that were never deployed, or Freenas is reporting the hrs wrong.

Here is those results from all 9 disks

Estimated delivery April 19th.
I've read the FAQ from Freenas. What do most people do these days for "Burning-in" I see a lot of references for using BadBlocks. For Freenas users, does this mean creating a separate bootable USB with a minimal linux system on it or running linux within Freenas?

After burn in, one drive had reallocated sectors. Still passed smart long test. I went ahead and setup a raid z3 just in case. :p

All but one of my drives passed the burn in test. The bad drive immediately began throwing smart errors after the test, so I pulled it and sent Newegg a message for a replacement drive.

Also, it would appear that one of my cages is definitely bad. I think a second cage may have some issues as well, but will require further testing to verify.

I think most of my drives reported some unc / read errors during badblocks.

I’m not a hard drive error expert, but I looked at the freenas burn in guides short list of data points that should raise alarms, and unc errors were not on the list.

Should I be worried?

I'm not sure. One of my drives had 1 reallocated sector, and 4 had none. So out of 6 ordered, 5 passed bad blocks and smart tests. 1 did not. I'll get a replacement for the one that didn't.

These appear to be HGST and not the OEM like we usually see. Does anyone have link to the hgst/Hitachi FW?

Well, provided they let me return everything, I've decided to scrap the whole project for now, and start with new parts. I still have all the guts for the server, which I could put to use as just a proxmox box. We'll see though. There's a 16 drive norco unit, complete with guts on CL right now for $200. If I get my money back, and it's still up, I may pick that up instead. I'm not 100% sure though.

Received 6 Hard Drives. All six passed Smart testing. 1 Had Reallocated Sectors and kicked out a number of errors during testing. I was able to return it without an issue.

Pretty happy with the deal overall. How did everyone else do?
