I still think 2690v4 is the sweet spot. 8.5% faster single thread, -3.5% multi-thread. slightly new arch, so less power consumption. $21 on ebay shipped. that definitely beats your $32 per chipI bought two of the 2699v3 for a total of $64 so now i have the fastest v3 cpu also. Still quite a bargain. you can't find better multicore score of dual 2699v3 for cheaper in any new intel or amd cpu!

I have a Asus Sabertooth X99 and a Gigabyte X99P-SLI. Hoping to be able to unlock all core load turbo boost behavior, though I guess I wouldn't need to run them hard or use anything other than these old hyper 212 coolers on them so maybe the play is really gonna be just to drop one of those CPUs in each and see if I come up with a workload for them in the next few years!

I did a little bit more reading. There is a 2697A v4, which should be 2.6Ghz 16 core, that is a step up from the 2.6Ghz 14-core 2690 v4... 2697A v4 appears to be going around $40, I could swing it, obviously the value prop of a $21 or $22 2690 v4 is superior but hey i'll still take 16 cores over 14 cores for 20 more bucks... Now the real question I suppose is deciding between these Broadwells and the Haswell 2600 v3 CPUs with potential for BIOS hacking to unlock 3+Ghz all core.

- Not sure how e.g. AVX workloads would work... it sounds like further tweaking would be needed to avoid that being a catastrophic power limit throttling situation. Unclear if solutions exist, although this post seems to indicate this isn't a big problem? I'd want to have a clearer answer on it...
- v3 only goes to 2133Mhz DDR4, only way to speed it up is with BCLK OC (v4 does 2400)
- Compute per watt surely suffers more at 3.6ghz

I tested the 64GB LRdimms on the Asus Z9PE-D16 and they worked! Got all 1TB ram to post even though the official specs say only up to 512GB ram!
If you want support for S3 sleep, then you would have to get the Z9PE-D16. Supermicro MB does not support S3 sleep on any of the X9 MB. even though X9SRA supposed to, it never work properly. I know because i have one.

That is the cheapest I have seen, there's an X10DRH for $10 more, but for that you just get less stuff onboard, so the only benefit I can see is slight power savings.

I just scored a Supermicro X12STL-IF for $29. It was sold as parts only. The CMOS battery holder was mangled and 2 of the 3 legs broke off the board. I replaced the battery holder and ended up with a fully functional board. Got my first look at the new IPMI interface. Very nice.
Wondering why the VGA on this board goes bad so often. At any rate, this seller says no return accepted whatsoever ;( .. A bit risky because you have to trust him that it's really only the vga port.
