Here's some photos of the 58s. First, the box, to prove they're the right rails:

Now the 57s. Box:

Canada Eh?
Very odd. 57s are supposed to be the deep rack ones (36") and 58 the short (26.6"). Hopefully you figure it >< . Perhaps 57 revision Bs are quite a bit longer. All my chassis are 3U or smaller (MCP-290-00053-0N 36" which allows full pull out)

PigLover, what is your rack depth? I took a photo comparing the two rails (the 57s and the 58s) and it doesn't look to me like the 58s extend out any further! (They DO have the yellow label, though.)
I don't recall the rack depth. I'll have to measure it.

PigLover, if there were some way to find out the model number of the rails you have, I would really appreciate it. I don't see the model listed on either of these sets, though. It may not be possible!
That is VERY odd. Unfortunately I think the part numbers are stamped in a place where I'd have to tear it down to find them.

That's what I figured. The rails we have here at work show three stamps, total. Repon, taiwan, and 1312. There's no Supermicro product number or model number or anything like that. So tearing it down wouldn't help. I would love to know where you got your rails, though. I wonder if the rail for the 826/836 (MCP-290-00053-0N) would work?

That might just be it... I got to my current config (1x SC846 4u, 1x SC836 3u and 1x SC216 2u) after 2-3 years of buy/sell/trade activity. I had several 2U SC826 chassis along the way and as I re-stacked things I always kept the rails that were long enough to pull things out.

Maybe the rails for the SC826 would work - MCP-290-00053-0N? I think they are likely compatible since the deep-rack alternative for this chassis is the same MCP-290-00058-0N rails used on the SC846.

You guys are really making me want a SuperMicro 846 with this thread :) What's the PSU fan noise like from the 2 900W supplies installed in these?

If you have the Platinum PSUs (920P or the 500w 520P I use) they are very quiet. The midplane fans are the ones you have to worry about - but if your MB PWM runs them slow then they are not bad either.

With 2x SC846E16-R920P chassis fully loaded with 2TB SAS drives, noise is 60dBA @ 3'. For reference, this is exactly the same amount of noise my refrigerator makes in my kitchen. It's noticeable, but not unbearable. I close the door to the office, and the noise in the hallway is 40dBA - very quiet.

You guys should see the email frustrations I'm going through right now. Three different people on the phone I couldn't understand, and one I could. Tech support told me to contact RMA. RMA is trying to sell me the 58s, and not accepting that they're not going to fix the issue. Apparently the web site is god to them, and can not possibly be wrong. I'm getting very frustrated with Supermicro right now. What happened to the days of calling them, immediately talking to a tech who knew their stuff, and getting issues fixed ASAP?

Ah-ha! We have a single 836 in the lab from a previous project. I stole the rails off that, and tried it on the 846. It looks like it fits perfectly, and solves the "can't open the lid" issue:

Standard rail on SC836 is also MCP-290-00053-0N (same as 826). That seems to the be the part you need. Don't know why SM ships the SC846 with rails that won't pull out all the way. Perhaps its a mechanical/loading issue with the 53s when using the full rated weight load of the 4u chassis?

That was my thought as well. When I pulled out the 836, I noticed that the rails stayed attached to the chassis. They came all the way out instead of stopping at the end of the rail like the 846 does. (Maybe these are just bad rails? They're pretty old and beat up.) Still waiting on Supermicro to get back to me to see if we can get these rails swapped out. If not, it's a $200 expenditure. Can't afford that right now. I just dropped five grand upgrading my home lab! I need to give the credit card a few months to recover.

I received an official response from Supermicro after directing them to this thread:

Hi,

Thank you for contacting Supermicro tech support.
MCP-290-00057-0N comes with SC846 chassis as default rail due to heavy weight (4U chassis) concern and UL regulation.
We have a rail set for 2U and 3U chassis that will work with SC846 and be pulled out a litter further. Users may use it with their own risk.
The part number of the rail set is MCP-290-00053-0N.

Thank you.

They basically quoted what I've already discovered. RMA also refused to exchange rails. So Supermicro knows about the issue, and is choosing to do nothing about it. I honestly expected more from them.

If it really is a UL and or safety issue then there is little they could really do. Even friendly/helpful companies have to listen to their lawyers and risk managers.

BTW, you can fix it for $45 shipped... MCP-290-00053-0N | eBay

Damn, that's a decent price. I really do need to stop buying crap, though. I can deal with the rails as they are for now.

I've got two blades spun up with E3-1220v3 right now. I'm going to hold off until the v4s come out and then fill 'er up. I'm uploading some images of the SSDs I've got for those two blades right now. I didn't see a lot of photos of the new Gen6 drive trays, so maybe they'll help someone. They do feel slightly more sturdy than the Gen 5.5 trays in the SC846. My biggest surprise was the noise level. I bought this thing expecting it to be loud. I was hoping it was only a little louder than my 846s. Nope. It's not. It's quieter. QUIETER. How freaking awesome is that?

I'm over the moon right now.

What was the part # on that chassis I googled the # in the image and got weird results, I'd imagine you have a complete part #?

Did you get this used or ebay?

What SM motherboards is it made to fit?

This interests me greatly :)
