    $127 Cisco ENCS5412/K9 Xeon-D 1557 (12 core), 32G ram

For me, OOB management with remote console (CIMC), total core count, and VM-VM networking performance. I have about 20 VMs on mine with maybe 12 running at any one time. I migrated a bunch of separate physical systems into VMs on mine and improved total performance and lowered power draw...

The onboard ports are connected to the PCH SATA controller. For SAS, you have to upgrade with their SAS RAID HBA that I have never seen in the wild.

11ab:be00 is the PCI vendor/device ID for the Marvell Ethernet switch. 0000:0e:00 is the PCI address, but I have seen this change after messing around in the BIOS. If it gets far enough for the "Service CPU not ready" I typically have only seen that when the switch has already been...

From what I could tell with some brief RE of an old NFVIS it looks like the NIM gets connected to one of the 10Gb ports on the internal Marvell switch. I have been wanting to test this also, but I have not found a 10Gb NIM for anything close to a reasonable price to test. It seems possible...

Thanks for confirming that MAS works with the Linux igb driver, I started digging into it but the ESXi driver does not seem to have any support for this and it was easier to use a copper GBIC than continue messing with it. I used the cheapest SFP I could get quickly (specifically this one) and...

EXPIRED Brocade ICX7250-48P ($105/ea OBO + Reasonable Shipping)

curious about these switches, I haven’t used a brocade switch since 2Gb fiber channel was a big deal, what makes this better than a Cisco say C3850-48U ?

I really hate how Cisco has a million different rack ear configurations for their 1U devices. I must have 5 different sets, all different, and none match the ENCS ears. There is a P/N though 700-45575-01 and some sites seem to list both this P/N and ACS-4430-RM-19. They do look identical.

mine came with rack ears, I have other Cisco gear I could check Monday if they match up with the ASR or switch patterns. the unit can also be racked from the opposite side in case anybody cares- useful for me as I have mine hanging vertically

I'm not running NFVIS anymore, so this is from memory, I may have had to change the shell to /bin/bash and there is a process that runs that tries to "fix" the admin and root accounts, so I may also have made /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow immutable (chattr +i) in order to get the shell working

    $127 Cisco ENCS5412/K9 Xeon-D 1557 (12 core), 32G ram

That's the one! Here's the lcpci output from ESXi 8 for the device. This device is only needed to bootstrap the switch module, once the switch module comes up you'll see link come up on both ports on the XL710 0000:0e:00.0 Network controller Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd...

    $127 Cisco ENCS5412/K9 Xeon-D 1557 (12 core), 32G ram

I am working on a simple ISO that can bootstrap the switch module, but in the meantime you can run NFVIS in a VM and pass through the “Marvell Ethernet Controller” should be PCI device 0e but I have seen it show up as 0b after messing around with various settings in the BIOS. truenas core and...

    $127 Cisco ENCS5412/K9 Xeon-D 1557 (12 core), 32G ram

I got ahold of a newer BIOS image, ENCS54_BIOS_3.06.SPA from 2022 but it seems to be broken. Upon installing it, it's no longer possible to get into the BIOS setup. It puts up a message saying "Set BIOS password in CIMC" with seemingly no way to do so. Clearing the CMOS, resetting BIOS to...

    $127 Cisco ENCS5412/K9 Xeon-D 1557 (12 core), 32G ram

I found the easiest way to get into NFVIS was to use the CIMC to mount a Linux Live ISO, boot from that, mount the internal SSD and remove the user.cfg as devz3ro pointed out. After that I booted with rd.break to change the root password and the admin user password. The process that responds...

    $127 Cisco ENCS5412/K9 Xeon-D 1557 (12 core), 32G ram

The switch module is actually configured through IP (specifically 169.254.1.0) There is a dedicated VLAN 2363 used by the host to communicate with the switch for configuration. It is a full managed switch with LACP, VLANs, POE, QinQ, QoS, etc lots of features, all controlled through a terribly...

    $127 Cisco ENCS5412/K9 Xeon-D 1557 (12 core), 32G ram

Yep, I don't have access to a recent NFVIS image but mine came with an image of NFVIS 3.8 or so. "Fragile" is the best word I could use to describe my NFVIS experience but ESXi has been solid. I am running from a USB stick right now, so I can pass the SATA controller through to TrueNAS but...

    $127 Cisco ENCS5412/K9 Xeon-D 1557 (12 core), 32G ram

Yep I thought the same thing. I'm guessing the XL710 does something(s) that the X552 does not, they do have a custom firmware for it. It seems to be something inside their modified I350 driver but I haven't really looked at exactly what it's doing yet. I did try to switch it with ethtool and...

    $127 Cisco ENCS5412/K9 Xeon-D 1557 (12 core), 32G ram

I have been playing with one of these for a few weeks, I was actually working on documenting some of my findings but haven't gotten far enough to post something yet :p but I can answer some questions It runs ESXi 8 1x Intel I210 is connected to the management port 2x Intel I350 ports are G0 and...

    ESXi boot from AHCI Passthru

This is bit of an obscure topic, but I always wondered why you couldn't configure PCI passthru / VMDirectPath I/O on an AHCI controller and actually directly boot a VM from it. It turns out to be a limitation that VMWare put into their VM EFI/BIOS, where it checks for their specific VID/PID...

    EXPIRED UK/EU - C240 M5 26sff - 40gbe

I finally got the extra parts in, got the SAS-HBA for the MRAID slot and Optane 900P in the riser for booting, used the Cisco HUU to update all the firmware, then hit my next blocker. I stuck in a Toshiba HK4R 1.92GB SSD (referenced on one of the other deal threads here) I had sitting around...
