Maybe a running best prices for the 3.5" and 2/5" caddys would be good.

3.5" drive caddys here: US$35 (single) / US$25 (6+) / US$20 (12+)

3.5" Blank (8XC41) here: US$8

There are a couple of Chinese sellers doing the 2.5" brackets (although strangeley, not the 3.5" ones) and I have requested a quote.

I'm quite interested in buying 24 or 48 of the 2.5" brackets, but not for $24 each. If your Chinese suppliers can do much better prices then I'm interested. Perhaps a group buy?

Also, Visa Computer (Justin) is charging just $15 for the 3.5" caddies if you buy the C6100 from him.

If no one is in a rush, before going off and buying, I'd wait until dba and myself get our 2.5" chassis in from VistaComputer, and can test with a selection of 2.5" trays. I currently have Dell R-series and SuperMicro 2.5" caddies to test with, and dba mentioned having some HP gear as well.

I am in for a minimum of 24 trays myself, wherever they come from.

One replied and is more expensive than EBay US. Still waiting for the second one.

The $86 auctions are with $13 shipping each so basically $50/ chip.

Which is still fairly good inc shipping if you don't want 10 units.

If someone was looking to buy with 8x L5520s then the S$899 deals are likely to work out cheapest unless the person already has some parts lying around.

Very true - $899 is pretty much unbeatable for that configuration. However, if you want lots of disk caddies or dual power supplies or 8GB DIMMs with your C6100 then the Vista barebones offer makes sense. He sells caddies for just $15 each when you buy a chassis.

And the Vista deal includes both PSUs, which easily makes up the difference in the costs you noted.

Vista's deal lets you be more flexible with the end product. If you want the "standard" configuration and don't care about running w/out the secondary PSU, no fuss, no muss, then the $899 deal is pretty good. But if you don't want X5520s, if you want more than 24GB/node, or if you need any other deviation, then Vista's deals is better.

Besides - once you start the process you'll learn Justin is just a joy to work with. He'll get first shot at any further Dell refurb purchases I make.

Also - Vista/Justin's shipping offer is very reasonable. Make sure you look at the price+shipping, not just the price. Some of the $899 offers that have come and gone have had very high shipping costs.

Yikes... may have another 4 nodes incoming to fill. Going to run out of RAM it appears. I don't want to use L5520's... but for the price hard to beat. Looks like I may soon have 12 sockets to fill.

Anyone tried these Kingston units $55 obo per CPU for RAM.
Kingston 12GB 3 x 4GB Memory Kit for Servers DDR3 PC3 10600 | eBay ? Seems like these may be an idea for C6100 memory.

Also since we are buyers here... good to know if anyone does win with offers.

You can find 2.5" drive sleds for a Dell C6100 on eBay, but they are some of the most expensive of all drive sleds - $20 to $30 each. The good news is that HP drive sleds fit - and fit perfectly. The sleds you need are those from any G5, G6, or G7 DL series server or MSA70 drive chassis. I'd post a photo but image upload is not supported in this forum. Luckily for you, these are some of the most popular drive sleds in the world and some of the least expensive. I just picked up 48 sleds for $220 - less than $5 each.

I have a pair of C6100s with 2.5" bays heading my way. When they arrive, I'll test the HP and Supermicro 2.5" sleds to see if they fit - or can be made to fit.
