thanks for our reply helsyeah ! I see ! the ES version of the 2683 V4 is 1885 points. while the one you sent that is OEM and V3 is 1860 points.

do you think it's worth it to drop a few performance points for the compatibility? and can't I find a motherboard that is compatible with the ES 2683 V4 ?

I bet you can find a motherboard, either single or dual processor, that will work with the 2683 V4 ES. I can't say which one's will exactly work, some ebay listings list which work and don't.

There is also the X-factor with those earlier CPU steppings *possibly* having really subtle reliability/stability issues. Since you seem to be looking at a workstation/rendering node type application you may never notice those subtle issues.

On the other hand, the cinebench difference is 25 points, all of 1.3% delta between the 2683V4 & 2683V3. Is 1.3% enough of a performance gain to go with ES 2683V4 over the OEM 2683V3 for you?

I guess the 2683 V3 OEM would be more reliable, wouldn't it ? I'd drop that extra unnoticeable performance for peace of mind. hmmm...o_O

ok lets assume I'd go for the V3 OEM one, is the seller legit ?

I'm trying to decide on the cpu because then I will search for a M.board memory and ssd's:oops:

As @RolloZ170 has indicated..

I purchased an E5-2658 v3 ES from hwtrade-e on eBay on 8/1, it arrived in PDX today 8/10. Asking price was $156, my offer of $145 was accepted (+ shipping). The seller communicated well and provided tracking details and a hwinfo "screen shot" of the CPU details. The tracking details allowed me to track the item through USPS from arriving in SFO through to delivery. CPU was in good shape, shipped in an anti-static bag with plenty of protection in a small box. This is not an endorsement of the seller, "just the facts, ma'am".

I have briefly tested the CPU with the following setup:
Supermicro SC846TQ chassis with 1x PWS-501P power supply
Supermicro X10SRH-CLN4F motherboard
Supermicro SNK-P0050AP4 CPU Cooler (mobo needs a narrow ILM cooler)
4x 4GB PC4-2133P-R (Micron I believe)
1x Kingston Hyper-X 120GB SSD
Windows Server 2012R2
BIOS and OS set for efficiency (min power)
Thank you so much for that post!
Hopefully I can write similar report after my purchase in close future.

A largely off topic question but...anyone ever managed to capitalise on the spare computing power of the computer? Ie do rendering for someone for money etc...? If so, how?

you could rent your processors' computing power to render farms.

I'm not sure how. I read something about that somewhere. you'll have to use google. I'm pretty sure it's not really worth it though.

could you help please

I've found something unpleasant about the 2683 V3 OEM. in the reviews someone is saying that it's not 3.0 ghz turbo and that it is capped at 2.26 ghz. in the cpu-z the seller attached it shows the max at 3.0ghz !!

Intel Xeon E5 2683 V3 OEM 2.0Ghz 35MB L3 14 Core Max Turbo 3.0Ghz 120W CPU

I'm thinking of getting this one instead although it is an earlier stepping

Intel Xeon E5 2683 V4 ES 2.0Ghz 40MB 16Core LGA2011 14nm 120W QHUY Processor

what do you think ?

there's something wrong with this ! both CPU's show the same reviews and the same dates !!!

Probably a flaw in ebay's product identification. If their system thinks that the two products are the same SKU, it will assign the reviews to both. It probably doesn't differentiate between v3 and v4, just takes the generic model number and that it's ES if you're lucky.

I've sent the seller a message to clear up the confusion.

the 3 GHZ turbo is the single core turbo, one or two cores at load and others shaking eggs, the all cores turbo is 2,3 GHZ on a ES, with BCLK at 99,80mhz it shows 2,29 or something else. here is a table of OEM/retail
