Switching from TQ to SAS2 backplane in SM 846

Recently bought a SAS2 backplane for my 846 chassi. Just one question since im not that smart on backplanes.

Will my drives somehow change id or simular that Will smash my raids due to the swap? Still gone be using the same m1015 (IT flashed) controller for passthrough to my storage VM (xpenology).

I had drives change numbers going from straight through to a SAS expander chassis but everything continued to work on FreeNAS.

I have a strange question or two

#1. how do I find the SAS2 backplane for 846 box?
#2. does that mean I can have one or two cables running to it instead of 24?

I am trying to manage my cables now but having 3 controllers and 24 cables is a pain. also as my box is old I might need to change MB in the near future and my controllers are PCI-X , not many new MB support that. having the expander backplane make the move easier.

The drive enumeration will change. This may or may not matter depending in your OS and files stem.

For example, if you were using ZFS, to be safe, make sure your pools are built using drive UUID instead of device names. Alternatively, you can just export your pools before making the swap and import them again afterword.

I can't reallly advise on your use case with Xpenology but perhaps a synology/Xpenology expert could weigh in.

Thanks @PigLover really apreciate the input.

My guess would be UUID. Since one Can migrate a set of discs from one model to another in the "Real" synology boxes. Gonna ask at the xpenology forum.

@vl1969 - Can be found on eBay, or try poking @sfbayzfs perhaps. Think he might have some left from his sales thread.
Yes, you Can run 2 cables from a SAS controller to the backplane

xpenology doesn't care about the drive order (it used to but not since DSM 5.X or so). I never pay attention to which bay which HD goes.

You can even switch to another controller. As long as it's in IT mode, nothing else matter. I moved my HDs from test setup to actual setup many times w/o any issue.

Stay with DSM 5.X, the codes used to compile xpenology DSM 6 are beta codes.

So.. now I got around to trying to make the switch.

However theres no link from my motherboard to the backplane. I connected to the J0 port from my port0 on my HBA (IBM M1015). And then I connected power. Thats about it..

Trying to decipher the instructions from supermicro.

Edit: Its the EL1 board from what I can tell (only SAS 8087 connectors on one side of the backplane).

Looking at the front of the chassi, theres no light in the drives at all. From what I can tell they are not spinning up.

Give me your TQ for a good price . I have a 846 collecting dust mostly because I don't have a good backplane to complete the system.

cables and moving from e3 to xeon-d with only 1 pci-e port

So yeah, seems it was a bad cable (or, two cheap china ones).

Now I just need to fix the LED status on the front.
