FYI, I bought one of these for $150 (BO) late December. Packaged extremely well. Board required some firmware/bios updates, works great.

FYI. Last deal was for SM X10SRL ( without LSI SAS ).
This one has LSI 2308 build in.

It got me thinking about my need of LSI onboard.

Actually its a (Broadcom) LSI 3008 SAS3 controller. Keep in mind you'll need Mini SAS HD SFF-8643 cables.

hmm. me too. But looking at how the PCIE lanes are chopped up:
X10SRH-CF
  • 1 PCI-E 3.0 x8 (in x16 slot),
  • 2 PCI-E 3.0 x8,
  • 1 PCI-E 3.0 x4 (in x8 slot)
  • 1 PCI-E 2.0 x2 (in x4 slot)
  • 1 PCI-E 2.0 x4 (in x8 slot)
X10SRL-F
  • 2 PCI-E 3.0 x4 (in x8 slot) Auto-switch to 1 x8 and 1 x0,
  • 2 PCI-E 3.0 x8,
  • 2 PCI-E 3.0 x8 (in x16 slot)
  • 1 PCI-E 2.0 x4 (in x8 slot)
I think I prefer the flexibility of the SRL and an add-in card...

If I was using this board for an AIO I fee like the 2 pcie 3.0 x4 would be very useful for nvme options. What exactly do you do with an PCIE 2.0 x2 slot? USB3?

But that's just me, now if the SRH had 10Gbe onboard (and especially SFP+) I'd be all over that in a heartbeat.

Yes, I am actually using an SM 2x M.2 card + adapters in the x8 slots to attach U.2 drives.

Yea, the 2.0 slots come off the NB, there are a few things I could see them being useful for, 2.5Gig NIC?

It is interesting that you prefer add-in cards for storage but you like on-board for networking?

For me it just comes down to money, a genuine LSI/Broadcom 12Gig 8-port SAS HBA easily costs many times this price (I know, I also have a 9400-16i). I like the one's with 10Gig (or both), same reason.

Yes Ocean-Tech is the same vendor with this SRH deal and the SRL deal back in December.
Yup, I actually started by purchasing a whole server from them just to get one of these boards, also for $150, not sure what to do with the chassis, but it is actually somewhat nice, only missing trays.

Then they posted these and I got another one for $150.

I actually don't prefer on board networking.

All of my home lab compute or AIO nodes are X10SRL-F with add in 2308 or 2008 and Melly CX3 dual 10Gbe nics. Pure Storage nodes are still X9DRD-7... I have spares, price was right. feature set etc. etc. etc.

The combination of 3008 and onboard 10gbe though - I can give up the obvious loss of pcie lanes then if the price is in the 175-225 neighborhood. I mean you should still have 24 3.0 lanes leftover...

Just one or the other with asymetric loss of onboard lanes - meh. to each their own though. what works for me doesn't work for you and vice versa. I'm cool with that. Reqs are always different for each of us. Heck my reqs tend to change every 6 months or less esp when DEALS are to be HAD!!! :)

Yeah, my other reason is that I want to play with RDMA and onboard NICs won't do that, whereas onboard 12Gig SAS should hold me for longer than that motherboard will.

Note that, I have not tried it, but it appears to turn the feature on or off for 2 slots in pairs, the two middle PCIe3.0 with one setting, and then the two outer one's with another.


And I am getting better at updating the LSI firmware, I think the EFI one is harder to do.

Yes, me too, I had to study the manual and the board diagram. Also the latest bios make a fairly big difference.

Yes! the PCIE breakdown diagram in the motherboard manual is super important to match which slots get split and you need to be careful because it is possible that the onboard SAS is configured against lanes that can be bifurcated on another slot and may present you with an option like x4x4x4x4 .

This is doubly true (ha ! Punny!) on an X9DRD-7ln4f using bifurcation as onboard devices are split between CPUS and devices at least on mine and the bios revision I am pretty sure I have an option to bifurcate the lanes going to the onboard 2308 selecting x4x4x4x4... Obviously you don't want to do that.
