I think the main problem with that chassis is that even though it might not be entirely outdated, the power supplies are ancient and horribly inefficient by today's standards.

stolen from another auctions:

Key Features 1. Redundant 500W Power Supply 2. 6x 3.5" Hot-swap SAS / SATA Drive Bays 3. 1x 5.25" Peripheral Drive Bay 4. 1x Slim CD-ROM Drive 5. 4x 80mm 6300 RPM Fans 6. 7x Low-profile, Full-length I/O Expansion Slots 7. Power Switch & 6 LED Indicators

Pass, get a R610/R710 fully loaded if you really want to mess with stuff for roughly the same price and MUCH better forward compatibility.

For $25? I'd buy it.

Overall it is a good chassis for a compute node. The PSU s are loud and there are no quiet equivalents that can be used to replace it.
