Nice, which NVME drive did you go with?
I went with the Intel SSD DC P3605 from here, https://forums.servethehome.com/index.php?threads/two-pcie-ssds-3-2tb-1-6tb.30496/ . The TBW/Endurance of 8.xxPB basically means i dont have to worry about writes. Leaning towards doing unraid still, and that will be my cache drive.
I have everything but the CPU's as of now.
It sure can, you need to populate CPU0, but you only get access to the "Ultra IO" pci-e slots and not the WIO pci-e slots.
The Motherboard Manual gives the details in the block diagram on page 1-10.
The Networking Ultra Riser Adapter Compatibility Matrix shows the various risers that are available for the "Ultra IO" slot. The unit from the server store ebay listing indicates that it has the AOC-2UR6-i4XT riser, (the first on the compatibility list), providing 4x 10Gbase-T, an "internal" pci-e x8 slot and an "external" pci-e x16 slot.
For what its worth, the link to the ESISO listing for this has been reduced by a good chunk, they are now only asking $312, whereas it was $432. $312 is less than the server store listing at $349.
However if the ESISO link does in fact NOT come with drive bays, even though the picture says it does, then i think the server store one may be a bet better deal. However if someone messages them, and they confirm it does, plus they accept a best offer a bit lower, than they may be something to consider.

I mean it really is pretty solid. As you mention these cases/mobo are built for GPU's if you want. Load them up with two of the 2680 v4's, and its really solid bang for the back. Im going unraid on mine, should end up with around ~67tb with a mix of 10tb, 8tb, and older 3tb drives, and 2 10tb parity, and be able to swap the 3's to 10's later if i want.
this is a good price, i recall when JUST THE 12 bay 2u SAS3 expander backplane (BPN-SAS3-826EL1) would cost this much (or more). it actually still does.
About 1 to 1.5 yr ago i bought the 4x NVMe variant of this exact 2u system (paid ~6-700$ for it, barebones). it did also have the 2x 10gb copper add-on card (and the x10-dri board, not the x10-dru like this one). I will say that this:
- It pulls more power than i expected (see below)
- the board that came with the system had weird power issues (ie would not power up unless i cycled removing and inserting one of PSUs / and or ran it with just 1x psu) , i ended up going through 2x more x10-dri boards in total that had similar issues like this (from different sources), but the final board that did not have this issue, has been rock solid 24/7 since then (~ 1.5yrs now), and under pretty heavy vmware VMs load, since then.
- Its fan ran way louder than needed (common w supermicro), even on optimal fan setting. The 10g NIC addon card is consistently the hottest part according to ipmi. I ended up putting all the fans on a 20$ noctua fan controller (with knob) that still allows the MB to adjust the fan speeds, but at a much reduced RPM (so is quieter). And i can adjust this with the knob if needed.
overall, outside of the power issues i had with some of the boards, ive been very happy with this ssytem, and its 4x nvme u.2 bays!

I know here's my calculation from what I could gather:
- Supermicro 6028U (SAS3) is 349$ at the TheServeStore
- 2x Intel Xeon E5-2683 V4 2.1Ghz 16 Cores 120W @ 349$ for the pair or 149.50$ each, couldn't find anything close to this except for ES from China, looks like a good deal.
- AOC-S3008L-8Le @ around 70-79$ on ebay by the looks of it
- Supermicro Original Rev B Rail kit are 75$ extra at the TheServeStore
Comes @ $852 USD but I guess they need to make abit of cash for assembly and testing and ebay fees @ 48$ so 899$ + 100$ per system shipped to me (reasonable)?
So I picked up the X10DRU-i+ barebone, got an E5-2680 V4 for it, and now I'm looking at memory. Eventually I would love to load it up with memory but for now just looking to get two sticks to make sure everything works first.

E5-2683 V4 for $174.50 USD but part of a complete system except RAM, still looking for around 70$ per 32 DDR4.

I'm considering the 6028U-TR4T+ for a dedicated TrueNAS build. Basically equipping this with a single lower end processor like a E5 2620-v3 to minimize power consumption. Does that sound like a reasonable option if that's all I'm using the 6028U-TR4T+ for?
I'm also a little concerned about the noise. Is the noise purely from the fans or the power supply as well?

I just setup my X10DRU-i+ (my first ever Supermicro) with a E5-2640 V4 and some Micron DDR4-2133 MTA36ASF2G72PZ-2G1A2 memory. For some reason the memory throws an error at start up about 60% of the time. I have two sticks and they both have the same issue. I'm not sure what's going on.
