I'm currently rethinking my homelab situation, since my 12th gen Dells are pretty power hungry, generate quite some heat and aren't quiet either. I have been thinking if a 13th or 14th gen single socket Dell server would work as well. But I'm a bit confused about performance:

I currently have a dual 10 core Ivy Bridge-based server (2x E5 2660v2 in an R720). I'm thinking about getting something like an R340 or an R330. From a pure Benchmark (passmark) perspective something like a Xeon E-2288G (8c/16t) should be about 5% slower than my dual CPU, 40 thread behemoth. But again, thats just from a benchmark perspective. Real-world scenarios are most likely a different story. If an application scales well vertically, the newer CPU should be night and day faster, if my application scales well horizontally, I could probably hit a limit with the core count. The latter could bite me because I don't have a specific application that runs on this platform, I use it mostly as a general purpose VMware virtualization server for OpenShift and a few other services.

But I've never done a migration like that, so I don't have any experience on how VMware workloads behave if I'd scale down to a single, higher performance CPU with less threads. Has anyone had any experiences doing a migration like that?
