SC836 & PWS-920P-1R quiet mode

I moved my home server into a SC836 I got for free. I knew the PSUs it came with were loud so I got two PWS-920P-1Rs right away. Ran a jumper from pin 17 on the ATX connector to ground to put them in quiet mode. The problem is, I don’t think it worked. Fans in them still doing at 6500 to 7500 RPM. I know it will never be a super quiet case, but I’m looking for quieter than it is. Could it be the power distribution board in my server? Instead of the wire for pin 17 being pure white, it’s white and black. I’m not above modifying the power distribution board to make it work either. Not looking forward to pulling it out due to the small space between the backplane and the front of it, but if I have to I have to.

Just sell them and get some PWS-920P-SQ's. They should just be plug and play.

I paid $20 for the ones I have. A single 920-S is $50.

The 920 SQs are mandatory for a homelab in my opinion, unless you or your family members are already hard of hearing.

The 920 R's won't quiet down. Agreed, the 920 SQ's are required for operation in any type of home environment.

I'll have to get PWS-920P-SQ one at a time then. Does anyone happen to know of a 3D model for a power supply blocking plate (I have a 3D printer so I can print one, just need a model)?

Also, what is the chance that the PWS-1K28P-SQ would fit?

To my ears the PWS-1K28P-SQ is quite a bit louder than the PWS-920P-SQ.

Temporarily If you are concerned about airflow you could use one of your other power supplies to block the space in the power supply bay. Just don't push it all the way into the bay. Until you figure out a 3d print or can find a cheap SM PWS bay cover.

The PWS-1K28P-SQ are ~$50 each while the PWS-920P-SQ are ~$100 each. Hence why I'd prefer the larger ones even if they are a little louder. Right now the fans in my PWS-920P-1Rs are spinning at 5k to 7k each, so even 4k would probably help a lot.

You'll need Supermicro CSE-PT0130L for the SC836 sized PSU's and other 76mm wide PSU chassis.
They're less than $20 ea. shipped on ebay and other places.

Or put the other $19 towards another PSU? Damn SQ ones are too expensive

Unless you need mission critical 24/7/365 high availability, I do not see a need to run two PSU's in a SOHO file server as it just wastes more energy.

To my wife and kids, Plex is mission critical Although given that I only have a single power line coming in......

You know...I think I have a 920p-sq lying around that I'm not using. If you want it, make me an offer, I'm reasonable.
