I'm interested in building a Threadripper system with a very large amount of memory. The plan is to purchase 4 32gb DIMMs in the beginning for 128GB total, and then upgrade to 4 more 32gb DIMMs for 256GB total later on. I am indifferent to ECC, but leaning towards wanting it.

I have read on this forum that TR is capable of this -- but are the X399 boards that are coming out capable too?

AMD Ryzen Threadripper Motherboards Comparison | VideoCardz.com

The specifications on all the X399 boards explicitly mention a 128Gb limit as well for all types of memory! For example, the ASROCK Taichi specifically mentions a 128GB limit:

ASRock > X399 Taichi

Any hope of getting a Threadripper system with more than 128GB memory without going to Epyc?

Threadripper is limited by available ecc udimms (currently 16gb?) accoring to an amd guys post on reddit. So if 32gb or more is available it should work with threadripper.

limited to unbuffered memory as far as I can tell. Though it does support ECC.

You could wait for EPYC single socket server or workstation boards and get all the RAM you want.

Someone mentioned to me that a 7401P 24 core/48 thread EPYC processor costs $76 more than the Threadripper 1950x so 8 more cores + 16 threads for very little. Just a balance of clock speed 2Ghz vs 3.5, workstation/server motherboard price, but you get more memory channels, more cache, and more PCIe lanes if they are required.
