I think we're missing some info here :)
What's the inefficient power supply causing 100w more usage ??
3Y Power redundant 820W YM-2821A in a Ci Design NSR316. That is a very common supply in non-Supermicro systems.

YM-2821A test report (PDF)
PWS-920P-SQ test report (PDF)

To summarize the reports - in the "typical" (half rated power) row, the 3Y has a PF of .9371 and an efficiency of 89.54%, while the SM has a PF of .97 and an efficiency of 94.27%.

I was surprised as well, but the sensor readings don't lie (they were repeated across 4 * chassis w/ 3Y power and 2 * chassis w/ SM power).

The only reason why I am upgrading was the natex motherboard prices and the fact that they had twice as many RAM slots in so I can get to 128GB pretty easily. PCI-E v3 was also nice. Part of me wishes I'd just bought a load of 16GB dimms and stayed with my present setup.

Why is that?
By and large it works - I don't really *need* a 2011 platform. My LGA 1366 services are build around dell boxes and supermicro thin server trays. So I can't upgrade them, I need to start again = £$£$£$. Hopefully I get around to ebaying the old kit whilst its still of use!
