To be precise, yes the 980 Pro has TLC, but to run the full performance it has to 'switch' into SLC mode. Otherwise, it will be able to hold 1/3 of it's max performance ~2K MByte/s only. The older the drive becomes, the less longer it can use SLC mode and .... puff PCe-Gen4 advantage is gone. The worst thing is, the decrease in performance is not linear with the 'age' of the drive.

Its not bad but again going back to the MP510 it's a lower price $135 new for the 960gb.
The 960gb version of that is rated for 1.7 TBW vs the 1.367 TBW in the PM963 and its over 5 years instead of 3.
When the 240gb version is only slightly less write durable (400TBW) for about $50 ~ and I'm using not even half that space.

I have recently bought four 1TB Silicon Power P34A80 SSDs, their endurance is listed as 1665 TBW, with a 5 year warranty.
I am not entirely sure how they manage to offer almost 3x the endurance as similar 1TB TLC drives, but there you have it:

Nice, thanks for the suggestion but I'm seeing the chart as only 800 TBW now (they might have changed specs, corsair's mp510 revision b is almost 1/2 the endurance of it's predecessor)



I did find the seagate firepro 510 to be fairly comparable to the MP510, however they are almost double the cost.
I think i'm just gonna end up buying another pair of mp510 240gb as backup for my use case.

800gb model has 3DWD or 4.5PB written with 5 years warranty.

Thats a bit more than I wanted to pay, but for 10x the endurance and 3x the storage size isnt a bad tradeoff for 250$, I paid 100$ each for my SAS SSD that i have 4 of to get the same 800gb (on top of needing an enclosure, that takes up valuable hdd space and makes noise).

Thanks @BoredSysadmin I think I'll pickup two of those micron max 800gb to replace my SAS SSD, my current ones are only rated for like 3PB and much slower than nvme.

Oooo those are nice, but I do alot of writing but not ALOT of writing .
That endurance is fantastic, but comparing to the micro only 2x the endurance and 100gb? gotta go with the additional space

So I actually ended up getting the 7300 Pro for about the same price as the max but I get better performance at a similar endurance (4.2 vs 4.5 pbw with over double the space (800gb vs 1.92TB). I lowballed him for $280/ea for two thinking he'd counter but he accepted ~ tbd on the condition (supposedly new in non retail packaging, will update once received).

lookin good so far, while it technically should be 3k read per drive I'm not really complaining
i suspect thats probably between the m.2 adapter or the bifurcation i'm using on the board, or possibly the OS limiting.

I am getting better than advertised write at least

The most impressive thing so far, even running at 100% write zeroing out, they aren't exceeding 50c temps.

So everything finished, however I got some teaser news that unraid is about to allow zfs capability on the cache pool in the new 6.11 version, so since I'd need to rebuild the cache anyway I'm going to wait to move over my VM and docker containers to the new drives until that occurs.

Sorry for digging this but about to bite the bullet on these drives. Any feedback on the endurance so far?

I'd be interested as well @gkovacs, I still have my mp510 but they're at about 1/3 their life span (144/400TB) so I'm considering upgrading them as they will hit their 5y warranty expiration next year.

The only minor issue with my micron ones are they seem to run extremely hot they idle/low usage around 60c, that said they're only at about 30TB after 2 years, so frankly im thrashing them alot less than I thought I did, I can just stick with consumer drives in the future I think.
I did get some heat sinks recently for them to see how they'll affect them, will update once i slap them on.

Micron drives do seem to run hotter than some others. I initially tried the 7450 Pro's and both spazzed out and lost their partition table in under a week. Not sure what the exact cause was since I couldn't do much with them and sent them back to Amazon w/o diving into them too deeply. A friend though opted to get a couple of them and didn't have the issue but, did make mention of the high temps. He put fans directly on them to keep them somewhat usable though. I ended up picking up a Kioxia though and it's been running fine and normally sits around 40C. I did a Linux disk speed test on it and it's hitting 6.5GB/s which is about where I expected it to be for a Gen4 drive.
