I just ordered this guy: 4U Supermicro 24 Bay LSI RAID Storage Server 2x Intel Xeon E5645 6 Core Rail 2PS | eBay yesterday. I'm going to use it as a replacement for my current FreeNAS box. I know there are some upgrades I need to make before I can use it, as my current drives are either 4 or 6 TB, which aren't supported on the new server.

My questions are this:

1. What do I need for a backplane? I think it's a BPN-SAS2-846EL1, based on what I've read, but they currently aren't available on eBay and are like $700 on amazon. What are my other options if I can't find that backplane? I need it to support large drives and at least 16 of them. I'm not overly concerned about fitment, as long as it doesn't impede airflow.

2. I'm currently using this raid card: Amazon.com: StarTech.com 4 Port PCI SATA RAID Controller Adapter Card PCISATA4R1: Electronics. Will this work for JBOD? Or should I track down a M1015? Or is there a 3rd option I'm not aware of?

Thanks!

Your other option is to go direct connect with the BPN-SAS-846A or possibly the BPN-SAS-846TQ, but they are also not cheap on ebay right now. You should reach out to @sfbayzfs as he has some listed at what are currently great prices.

For sure get a proper/more modern/well supported by FreeNAS (anything ZFS/software based stg) HBA, anything LSI really, 2008/2308/3008 series.
