Okay, so what's preventing nVidia or AMD from wiring a bunch of NVMe to each of their compute units and write OpenCL shaders/kernels/programs to get something similar going?

@WANg they then need the networking followed by the software stack.

But where you are going on the NVIDIA side is the BlueField series https://www.servethehome.com/nvidia-bluefield-2-and-bluefield-2x-dpu-offerings-launched/
Hmmm...the nVidia angle doesn’t surprise me one bit. Their GPU expertise translates well to “fabrics of stream processors”, and tying it together with storage and networking just seems like a logical next step - they bought Mellanox for a good reason. (But then, Intel might be able to jump into the field with some rejigging of various pieces in their hardware portfolios).

As for AMD...probably something that would improve upon with their Xilinx buy-out (ehh...they will get their hands on Solarflare?)
