I'm in the process of pricing out a new server/NAS for my home. Based on familiarity, I will be running Ubuntu with ZFS with (initially) 1 SSD for the OS and 2x3.5" HDD mirrored. I anticipate this to grow to 4 within a year. Beyond that, I would be considering a separate SAN chassis.

I've got an existing 19" wall-mount rack with 18" depth and 3U spare vertically. I'm looking for a chassis to fit in this and came across http://www.logicsupply.com/products/te_1160. Has anyone seen this? Any comments feedback?

This would be pre-supposing I go with a mini-ITX mobo; either the Supermicro X7SPA-HF-D525 or ASUS P8H67-I.

Any feedback welcome!
J.

If you really think you are going to expand beyond four drives soon, maybe think about a 3U chassis. Buying things twice is expensive and 3U allows you to use larger fans which run quieter.

Part of my challenge is that I've only got 18" to work with depth-wise. Do you know of any other rack-mountable chassis that would fit?

Supermicro SC5xx series 1U's and SC82xM series 2U's might be worth looking for a deal on.

I would check out norco cases if you must have rackmount but at that price at least consider an HP Microserver which can handle up to 5 drives or a small Lian Li mini ITX for 6 drives.
