I know with windows there is a way with FSRM with file screens and with Linux samba you can prevent certain extensions from being saved. Is there a way with OmniOS to do the same. I'm looking for an SMB.conf file but cannot find one. So I figure there's another way somewhere.

The kernelbased Solaris server has no config file.
There are some share properties see napp-it menu Services > SMB > properties

Beside that everything is set as a ZFS property.
This means that Solaris SMB is ultrafast and zero config. Regarding permissions or previous versions it offers a higher level of compatibility to ntfs than SAMBA but it offers on the other side not as many options than SAMBA.

The kernelbased Solaris CIFS does not offer such a feature but this would not
help with newer Ransomware like TeslaCrypt 4.0 as this one does not add an extension.

You should create enough snapshots that you keep for some time to have always
unencrypted data.
