Does anyone understand the current pricing of V4 CPUs right now? It seems that E5-26xx V3 cpus are *significantly* cheaper than V4 cpus via eBay. Why is this?

Many of the servers originally using the v3s are getting close to hitting the 5y EOL mark and being recycled/retired by companies.
Most of the v3 were released around September of 2014.
Standard supply and demand, as more of them are available the prices become cheaper.

The v4s will have the same thing happen about this time next year likely.

So would you say if you want performance per dollar and via watt, it's more or less V3 being the sweet spot?

Depends what you're looking for, but yes the v3s are the best bang for buck for recent generation.
The drawback is the slightly higher cost of ram as they use DDR4, so if you need either very little ram, or the ram speed isn't important the v3 is ideal.

If you need a couple hundred gigs of ram but less CPU intensive, the v2s might be more economical.
