Thinking about jumping on the used 2670 deals like so many others. I don't have any particular needs, the only CPU intensive thing I do is Plex Media Server, and I've currently got a dedicated E3-1270 for that, and it doesn't break a sweat with 3 simultaneous 1080p streams. I think I'm 2+ years out from needing to worry about 4K. I could probably decomm the E3-1270 and run PMS in a VM on this machine for more consolidation.

Mostly I just want room to stretch when I setup some permanent VMs for various small tasks, and possibly some transient VMs for vagrants. Thinking of going with Proxmox to keep things easy. Or maybe just straight libvirtd in front of KVM.

My primary concern is how running this thing 24/7 might affect my electric bill. I don't NEED it, but it would be nice to consolidate. I read a post where someone said a system like this raised their electric bill $30/month.

Obviously case is subjective. I'm not planning to rack mount it. It will sit in a corner of my office once the build is done. I think this should be reasonably quiet for that environment?

If you have no need... Why upgrade? I noticed a drop in my power bill when i shutdown my e3-1230. My storage now runs on a AMD 5350 with fewer disks.

I use Virtualbox on my desktop when I need to spin up VM's.
