Not quite getting the U.2 thing, still.

If you have a mainboard with "Eight (8) SATA 3.0 ports or 2x NVMe dual use interface (Mini-SAS HD)" such as the SM H11SSL, is that two U.2 connectors?

yes, typically implemented as two SFF-8643 connectors on the mainboard. (1) SFF-8643 provides connectivity for up to (4) SAS/SATA channels *OR* (1) u.2 NVME (gen3). The connector to the drive(s) is/are different however. This is only the main/mother board side.
