This might be a long shot, but if anyone is upgrading from a DS916 to another unit, can I please borrow the DS916 for a week? I will pay for all shipping fees and the like.

I sold off my unit and kept the drives... And when I am reusing the hard drives in a new Synology unit, the new unit is insisting on a reformat and reinstall.. Which I don't want to do because I have data on my existing drives. Cue panic mode

I want to borrow the 916 so I can do a data transfer and preserve some of the photos and data that I haven't backed up off-site to my parents house.

Thanks

Hazily, for your needs it is probably a good idea to create a VM, pass through the drives/controller to the VM and run Xpenology.
You "should" be able to import/migrate the existing data from the drives into the instance.
Then you can get the data you want off the drives.

I have used this guys tutorial successfully for doing xpenology on my proxmox hypervisor.

Also, if you prefer you can spend 5 pounds and get a prebuilt VM image from these guys.
I used their image before they started selling them.
Their page changed to here.

I have no affiliation to either. Just offering you some help around your dilema.
