Does this adapter even exist?

I would investigate what the chip is that you are nearly covering. I worry about airflow restricted.

If you put a blower on the M.2 (as you should IMHO along with heatsink) you should allot a little airflow to the underside as well.
Side exhaust fans work nicely.

I am surprised you had to drill this adapter. I thought the middle perforation hole would line up.
Sorry.
I was looking to use that adapter with an X11SSV..

The reason I had to drill the hole is because the connector section was doubled thus moving the holes further back. This was not the intended purpose of this adapter so that's understandable. I decided to remove the adapter and just use double sided take on the 2260 stud to hold the drive. I think this will work just fine, I had a heck of a time getting the tape to let go when i removed the adapter.

I am not sure if you factored signal loss that might happen. Guessing you’d aim for stability, presented solution might in fact bring other issues. (Or not)

i will repeat myself. quality 3m thermoproof double sticky tape, 2230/2242+adapter would be my choice over above.

to avoid sticky issues (prying off smd components, etc) just use layer of quality kapton tape on motherboard and flash pcb.

thats how i do it when necessary.

What adapter are you referring to?

Don't need an extender, need a reducer. Board has one 2260 mount and I want to install a 2280.

Yes i understood it. But in real life you wouldn’t try fitting larger tires over too small wheelrims, would you?

Instead of wasting time keep it simple.
Not all things that can be done, should be done. Don’t get me wrong. No pun intended.

What benefit that particular 2280 drive present that you won’t consider 2230/2242 if i may ask?

There is no mount point for a 2230 or 2242 drive but it just occurred to me that I might find what I need in one of those sizes. Only thing I've found in 2260 is garbage. Off to look at 2230 / 2242 drives.

Crap. I found a 2242 drive that would work but now I can't find an extender that goes from 2242 to 2260. :(

A lot of 2230 and 2242 drives I've found have horrid endurance and were designed as stock drives for tablets/laptops.

If I were in your shoes, I'd use a riser adapter as linked earlier -- passive male m.2 adapter with perforations to snap off at 2260 (or 2280 and tape!), to ribbon cable, to female m.2 adapter that can be as long as you like and accommodate double-sided drives. Then just mount it however you like in the case to allow for cooling.

Thanks. The CPU for this system is coming from China so I have some time to find a solution.

I don't understand why vertical M.2 isn't a thing, either by adapter or stock on the motherboard, it would save space and make cooling easier, but I haven't seen anyone try.

Some Gigabyte motherboards (x470/x570)have a verticle slot M2 for Wifi module that rides right at I/O shield. Support bracket also hosts SMA jack.
Its shielded so you got to tear it apart to see the slot.
FreeBSD wireless sucks so bad I changed one out to Atheros AR5BWB222 just for principal.

I got that slightly wrong. The Gigabyte motherboard WIFI module is not shielded and you can easily change it out.

ASRock Fatality X470 has the shielding around theirs on real panel and I suspect it too is M.2 inside.

Firecuda 520N / TLC based (2230)
WD SN740 / TLC based (2230)
Sabrent Rocket 2230

There are some reasonable drives available in this form-factor. Reasonable for both OS/scratch-purposes.

I've got a SN740 (2242) on the way along with an extension kit.
