Hi all,

Does a small switch exist that has both SFP and RJ45 10Gbe ports?.

I have gear in the shed > 100mt away and so copper isn't quite on the money for 10Gbe to be negotiated.

All I'm after is 1 x 10Gbe SFP and a few 10Gb copper ports but I'm struggling to find much at all.

At this point in time, I think my only option is go with sfp ⟷ copper 10Gbe converters, or replace my current router with OPNSense and include SFP and Copper 10Gbe PCIe NICs...

I've looked a couple times now and am not seeing much... anyone else know of something?

Cheers

For 10Gb, you need SFP+, not SFP.

  • Mikrotik CRS305-1G-4S+IN with Mikrotik S+RJ10. Strap an 80mm or 120mm fan to the top of the switch to prevent overheating.
  • QNAP QSW-M804-4C
  • Mikrotik CRS312-4C+8XG-RM
  • Ruckus ICX7150-C10ZP. The -C10ZP version has 10GbaseT but it's expensive.

Look for surplus Dell N1524 like this DELL N1524 24-PORT GIGABIT SWITCH w/ 4x SFP+ PORTS | eBay 75 bucks Colorado Springs. Generally there is always alot of Dell N series on ebay that should fit the bill. If you go beyond 4 SFP+ i.e. 24 ports things will get hotter and louder. Geizhals is alright but for this case if you want something sturdy not some b/s TP-Link low-end switch that will die three days after warranty expires, I prefer out of support OEM models. There are SFP+ modules which let you go from SFP+ to 10GBase-T 30 meters but ideally, try to get rid of copper ethernet for >1 Gbps to save electricity and cut packet latency to 1/10th. On ebay just try "dell switch sfp+" then narrow it down to models of interest. Let us know what you found and bought.

Thank you for the responses!

yes, SFP+ is definitely what I'm after so thank you for pointing this out.

And thank you gea and NablaSquaredG for that link too! very handy.

I should have added that the gear in the shed is all racked and so can be as noisy as it wants to be, but the switch I'm after will be hiding behind the TV in the living room in the house (this is the junction/termination point for all ethernet throughout the entire house).

This is why I was after a small switch in hope it would be fanless and it looks like there's not much to choose from.
I guess it all depends on what your definition of "small" is... So, I'm after tiny then! and ideally fanless with a bonkers heatsink... ← I don't think it exists yet. (eg, 1 x 10Gbe RJ45, 1 x 10Gbe SFP+, 2 x Gbe would be perfect)

The Ruckus is the closest thing I'm after, but for the price... holy smokes...

I did some more homework on the weekend and I think the following SFP+ to Copper converter is about as good as it gets for being fanless.
Either that or I look at 10GBase-T SFP+ Transceivers which would also work. I hear these transceivers/converters run fairly hot and so has anyone got experience with these not being in an a/c controlled room?

Thank you again for you all your help and information with this, I've learnt plenty.

MikroTik CRS305-1G-4S+IN + 1x S+RJ10?
+ 2x S-RJ01?

Just make sure that it's well ventilated (if in doubt, place a super silent fan to cool the 10G modules)

The CRS305 has to be the smallest 10G switch you can find, I ran mine with one 10G rj45 module and two DACs without additional cooling for a couple years, added a 120mm fan now that I'm thinking about a second 10G rj45 module (if you have access to a 3D printer I have a model for a duct.) There are now 10G rj45 modules rated for 80m which use less power than the older 30m modules, and unlike some other Mikrotik devices, the 1G port on the CRS305 isn't just a management port, it's connected to the switch fabric properly and runs at 1G, so there's one module you don't need to buy and power.

QNAP QSW-IM-1200-8C is fanless. Alternatively, put a quiet switch behind the TV and a noisy one elsewhere in the house?

Maybe this one will work for you - QNAP QSW-308-1C: 2 - SFP+ , 1 - SFP+ or RJ45, 8 - 1Gb.
