Power consumption improvements are nice, given that the performance is boosted slightly! Will be very interesting to see how much better the E5-2* chips are.

I still giggle at news like that over here. "Cool, new stuff that is a bit faster, and this, and that...Hopefully the last generation pops up on ebay within a few weeks." ;)

One reason I like this site too. It's really value driven rather than here is the newest shiny thing.

New generation 5% faster < 5% slower generation is 50% cheaper

I expect the server chip WITH application support for transactional memory (Esxi, sql server) , enhanced memory (DDR4) , faster bus to be 2x faster than nehalem/westmere platform.

If I were waiting to upgrade my old platform, it would be haswell as anything less than 2X is just not worth it.

Also the K parts might want to skip since they lack VT-D and transactional memory (what else?)

I'd assume the really cheap stuff needs to come off lease though. That shouldn't be happening until 2015 assuming a 3 year lease term.

This is the LGA2011 K parts so as long as you do not have a super-early stepping, they actually support VT-d: ARK | Intel® Coreâ„¢ i7-3930K Processor (12M Cache, up to 3.80 GHz)

I built a workstation with a P9X79 WS after the review. Solid board and GREAT platform. I am debating whether to build the next as UP or DP but will be staying LGA2011 for the next build for sure.

Some may have seen something quite interesting in today's post:
droooool! thats so much win right there
