Hi!
I've been stalking multiple threads about upgrades of home servers lately.
But rather than hijacking someone else's thread I post my own.
My current server is an:
- Intel i7-3770K CPU @ 3.50GHz
- 32GB Ram
- 4x10TB WD Red (5400 RPMS) (Non raid)
- Mellanox ConnectX3-Pro (Dual 10G)
I'm running applications such as Plex, Apache, Nextcloud, influxdb, grafana, vaultwarden to name a few.
I run almost everything using docker containers.
The reason I'm starting to investigate an upgrade is not due to lack of resources (Cpu, Ram or storage), but the fact that I bought this hardware back in 2010:s and
I'm worried it will not hold forever.
My energy consumption from this setup is really good. Looking at idle loads of 50-55 W.
Some requirements
- More CPU (Possibly with QuickSync support)
- More RAM (Not sure if ECC is needed)
- Not significantly increased power draw
- At least 6+ SATA Connectors
- No additional GPU
- Some PCI lanes to handle at least a Mellanox ConnectX3/X4 with 10G optics
- Low noise
- Should fit in ATX-standard chassis but plus if it can later on be moved to 2U-4U
- IPMI support or similar
What I have been looking at is
- Supmermicro with Xeon (Gold, Xeon V4 etc)
- Some modern approach with barebone i5-8500T or better
- Consumer CPU+ Mobo, i9 for instance
Any recommendations, or just general pointers or other architectures to explore?
Thanks in advance,
S
