Intel seem to be releasing 3 new JBOD enclosures this month;

JBOD2312S2SP - 2U 12x 3.5" single port drives - 36 port SAS expander, 460W PSU, 2x SFF-8088 connectors.
JBOD2224S2SP - 2U 24x 2.5" single port drives - 26 port SAS expander, 460W PSU, 2x SFF-8088 connectors.
JBOD2224S2DP - 2U 24x 2.5" dual port drives - 2x 36 port SAS expanders, 2x 460W PSUs, 6x SFF-8088 connectors.

As highlighted in Intels blurb...

A new flexible and expandable storage system with single-cable connectivity, redundant
fans, and options for redundant power supplies simplifies your server configuration. Based
on traditional JBODs, or “just a bunch of disks,†this rackable 2U system features either twelve
3.5†drives or twenty-four 2.5" drives and works seamlessly with Intel Servers for a complementary
storage solution. Includes basic management features reported through SES.

Key Features:
• Options for single or redundant SAS / SATA 6.0 Gb/s connectivity via SFF-8088
• Fan and PSU monitoring / notification via SES
• Redundant power and cooling
• Less than 25â€-deep chassis
• Allows cascading (two levels)
• With dual-port backplane will offer full redundancy
• 12 TB+ storage capacity

Key Benefits:
• Shared FRUs and look and feel with Intel® Server 2U systems—bezel, drive carriers,
rails, PSU, fans, etc.
• Extensive validation with Intel® Server products and Intel® RAID adapters
• Support for Microsoft* Cluster

No pricing I am currently aware of.

Hmm. I'd quite like to see the pricing on the single-port 2U 2.5" JBOD enclosure - will have to go chase up the local rep and see what they have to say...

Rimblock these look nice, but undoubtedly pricing will be geared for midsize to enterprise, I'd be surprised if the 12-bay 3.5" was any less than say $1500. Excellent specs on all these though and the shortened 25" depth is nice.

TBH, just came accross this when checking the Q4 update to the Intel Product Matrix for resellers and have always liked the look of getting a storage shelf but the Supermicro chassis (vertically mounted drives so they look like a row of books type) is a bit too pricey for home use.

Waiting to see what these come in at...

Also looking out for the Atom S which may be a nice alternative for a low power basic SAN depending on the default networking etc on the boards.

...whats the point of dual expanders in a chassis that supports only 24 drives?
Its a redundancy feature for High Availability environments. In a full HA environment you want redundant everything. Two data paths from two servers to the JBOD through separate SAS expanders going to dual-ported SAS disks. Redundant PSUs.
