    Live USB + Napp-It

If you can get the OS to install to it and boot you can use it, what you may need to watch out for is how aggressive the OS + Napp-it will be in writes to your medium, you don't want to kill your flash drive unduly fast.

    Temperature Reporting

Started hauling stuff out of my closet in preparation for moving and touched my ESXi box, found it a bit warm to the touch. So I thought, hey time to check the temps and see how it's handling the much much warmer weather. Looking around in ESXi there is simply no temperature reporting(yes, I...

Advice On Configuration(pfsense, managed switches, multi-wan)

Using Pingtest.net, not the best metric but I compared it pfsense vs my standard dlink router, so the results should hold well enough for my purposes. I'm going to give it a try using an actual adapter for the LAN, hopefully that can clear up some of my troubles.

Advice On Configuration(pfsense, managed switches, multi-wan)

So now I've tried it, and I must say that performance is fairly abysmal. I'm not sure if I need to do tuning in pfSense or dedicate physical WAN and LAN ports for the guest, but atm I get absolutely terrible performance using a virtual install of Pfsense. Using pingtest.net I'm up from 0% packet...

Advice On Configuration(pfsense, managed switches, multi-wan)

Thanks PigLover, judging from what you say I don't think it's too much a concern for me.

    AMD C32 and G34 Boards

I'd like to see what this is capable of, my very AMD-dedicated friend is going to be planning a storage build soon, this could provide something more interesting for him to work with. Sadly I doubt the hype will be matched but that's life.

    IRQ Interrupt Storm

Solved it quick and dirty, I added a secondary virtual NIC to the machine and luckily it mapped to 17(wooo) so as long as I connect to the IP provided to that NIC I'm fine. Yeeha! Thanks for the help

    IRQ Interrupt Storm

I have a Supermicro X8SIL. I peaked around the BIOS but can't find anywhere that seems to indicate the ability to set IRQ assignments.

    IRQ Interrupt Storm

*SOLVED* IRQ Interrupt Storm *SOLVED* So my current setup is as follows: ESXi --> FreeBSD(ZFSGuru custom distro) running in the hypervisor with 2xIntel SASUC8i controllers passed through directly to the guest Now my issue is a huge wave of "interrupt storm detected on IRQ 18/19...

    Haven

Alright thanks! Once I actually get a working DVD drive and 3! midterm exams done tomorrow I'm going to dive into this :) I like the idea of running it all in a backend connection, my preference is of course that nothing else in the house has access to the iSCSI target but the WHS VM so I'm...

    Install from USB

Yup, ESXi just seems to fail every time. I even confirmed the iso working by making a DVD of them. However I managed to get UDA working, so hopefully this solve my problems.

    Install from USB

No it seems I can't, I've tried on 3 separate machines, none of them are seemingly able to create a bootable ESXi USB drive. Windows and Linux both worked but no dice on this. Tried used UltimateDeployment to do a PXE boot but it seems I am far far too stupid to use this software :/

    Install from USB

I have tried that method, the line where it states that running that command will copy a file...well it simply doesn't. Edit: Tried a few more times and it did, still no love, no machine is capable of booting from this USB drive :( So far I have tried dd on OS X, UNetbootin and syslinux. I've...

X8SIL, I decided against the version with IPMI onboard and now I am really regretting the decision.

    Install from USB

Got all my parts today, only to realize that my sata DVD drive is broken and my board has no IDE connector....so, how do I install ESXi? I've tried a number of methods for creating a bootable USB drive and so far not a single one works. Help please

Going to be watching this with some interest, it looks like your buildout is going to be quite similar to my own.

Awesome news, guess that means I can finally punch this baby off :) Also, great discussion in here, really handy to see what the part number actually means

Advice On Configuration(pfsense, managed switches, multi-wan)

So for my new and improved fileserver I'm rolling a pfsense installation alongside(virtualized in ESXi, and yes I am aware of the risks of running my firewall on the same box as my fileserver). This box will be managing 3 separate WAN connections and in lieu of buying a quad NIC(too rich for my...

    Feasible setup for WHSv2?

Great to hear, I'm not entirely sure HOW to even get this running in a single box so if you do a writeup that would be pretty great. My performance seems to be related to a combination of 4K sector drives and really shitty SIL3124 based sata addin cards. I'll be keeping an eye out for this :D
