I've been monitoring the Raw_Read_Error_Rate SMART attribute on a set of 12 HGST 7K4 4TB SATA HDDs in one of my servers. The Raw_Read_Error_Rate goes from 0 up to 65536 once a week, usually during the full backup run. Then, it eventually goes back down to 0 again by itself. Or, if I run a SMART short test, it will go back to 0 again.

My feeling is that this isn't worth monitoring, at least as a scalar value by itself against a threshold. What are other people's experience? Any value in monitoring this?

Raw read errors generally don't worry me too much. I think it's often an indication of a bad connection or cable. I've a couple of disks that throw them from time to time, and while I'll keep track of them I don't consider them a red flag like reallocated or pending sectors.
