I just got a HGST SSD800MM (https://www.hgst.com/sites/default/files/resources/US_SSD800MM_ds.pdf) and I'm new to SAS and specifically SAS 12Gb/s. My motherboard (X11SSL-CF) has an onboard LSI 3008 with two SFF-8643 connectors. What kind of cable would I need to connect this new bad boy? from the research I did it seems like it would need to be a SFF-8643 -> 4 x SFF-8680 cable, something like this 12G Internal HD Mini-SAS SFF-8643 → (4) SFF-8680 Target-based dual port 29-pin drive receptacle - CS Electronics but I need confirmation.

Do you need dual ports?
If no get a normal miniSAS HD to 4x SATA fanout cable like this one Supermicro Internal MiniSAS HD to 4 SATA with sideband Cable 90/90/75/75/75cm (CBL-SAST-0556)
I actually have two cables like this LSI LSI00409 0.5m Internal Cable SFF8643 to x4 SATA HDD (mini SAS HD to SATA data port)--Avago Technologies-Newegg.com on order to connect regular SATA spinners. Are you saying this should work with the SAS SSD? and it accepts regular SATA power?

Yes if you use a "tq" style backplane.

But I realize that I didn't ask if you want to use a backplane/drive cage or directly connect the ssd to the onboard lsi controller.

For now lets assume it will be connected directly to the motherboard; the drive cages I have are SATA-only so I can't connect it there.

EDIT: so I checked the drive cage more thoroughly and it officially states it's compatible with "SATA 3/6Gb/s and SAS 1/2", looked inside and sure enough the backplane connector can take a SAS HDD. Question is though, if it officially supports up to SAS 2 am I going to run into electrical signal integrity problems trying to operate the SAS3 SSD in there? also, what kind of 2.5" to 3.5" adapter am I going to need that lines up the connectors properly so I can insert it into the cage?

I should read more carefully, especially on hot days.:p

The cable you linked in the first post should work if you want to connect the controller directly with the sas ssd.

I've not used any converters myself but I believe folks have used Dell & HP ones successfully in SM 3.5 trays
