I'd pickup a cheap PCI-express extension before butchering anything :) You could buy a 8x extension and dremel out the back like you want to do to the motherboard already, or buy a 8x - 16x if you want something cleaner. $5 tops, they are everywhere now a days. I recall someone on YouTube...
