@RedX1 I also picked up 2 8259CLs from him on ebay, and also using MD71-HB0, but I'm having some issues -- see post: https://forums.servethehome.com/index.php?threads/gigabyte-md71-hb0-datto-siris-4-bios.43158/post-427234 -- do you mind sharing versions / files of BIOS/BMC of your working setup?
@RolloZ170 Any chance you have known-working BIOS/BMC revisions? I saw a comment from you previously that 8259CL should be compatible with Gigabyte MD71-HB0, but now I'm thinking it may be a BIOS/BMC issue causing some kind of throttling or other hard stop. I didn't see anything interesting on...
So, finally got around to tinkering a bit more. For any future readers that might have an interest in this particular combination of hardware...
I had 1 CPU in (8259CL), 1 PSU plugged in. Then the IPMI Ethernet port. BIOS finally loaded from this screen after waiting a long time - didn't time...
I'm able to hit DEL key after POST but after a bit it stops on this screen:
I wasn't able to find "Sending BIOS Setup Menu to BMC" anywhere in Gigabyte's docs. I can guess it's trying to start up some kind of remote management, but I would like to just be able to access the BIOS locally if at...
Actually, I only have one question, which is "Does this server I got (Cisco UCS C240 M3 Rack Server Intel Xeon E5-2609 v2 x 2 12GB RAM No HDDs | eBay) support 24x 64GB LRDIMMs?"
The doc you linked states that LRDIMMs would be supported using virtual rank reduction:
So 12 LRDIMMs with 8...
Any way to verify such limits? If Intel lists the E5-2609 v2 as supporting 768GB over 4 channels, that clearly means the CPU supports 64GB DIMMs, right? Unless this figure is referring to the max total across two sockets. Besides that the only foreseeable issue would be with the MB rather than CPU.
I snagged Cisco UCS C240 M3 Rack Server Intel Xeon E5-2609 v2 x 2 12GB RAM No HDDs | eBay which came with 2x E5-2609v2. According to Intel the CPU supports a max of 768GB Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-2609 v2 (10M Cache, 2.50 GHz) - Product Specifications | Intel which hopefully means per socket?
You may as well buy direct from them : https://www.newegg.com/intel-optane-ssd-905p-series-960gb/p/N82E16820167463
They have 1.5TB models for almost the same $/GB, too.
Main upside to P4800X is it has 3x the DWPD. But it's bordering on abuse if you manage to write over 17PB of data to one 905p...
I think I asked the same seller about 6268CL and 6253CL and then they took off the part about HP servers from the descriptions. They don't seem too sure of themselves...
Cost of barebones z6 g4 + heatsink is ~$200 right now so I might still spring for it and try, though, if I give up on the Dell.
Well, that's unfortunate. I think HP might be a similar situation. They don't have the actual downloads available for their older BIOS versions, but they still have the update announcements. Support for Pmem was added in BIOS 2.35, released Nov 2019 - given Dell 7920's 2.3.1 was Oct 2019, I...
Well, I'd like to validate the 6268CL I already got, so if I can do at least that before my eBay return window ends that's something. :)
My plan B was getting an HP z6/z8 g4. At least it seems it should be easier to get it working as I've seen several scattered reports on benchmark sites with...
