Is there a list confirming which SKUs do and don't need this mod? Specifically I'm wondering if 6253CL, 6268CL, 8272CL, 8273CL, which afaict all have <=205W TDP / 228A TDC, would work with a Dell 7920 or similar HP/Lenovo workstations out of the box. Seems like it should but couldn't find confirmation.

Thanks so much!! Good info is scarce and most only report TDP.

Hopefully this isn't too off-topic but since I saw @PandaChan modded 7920 and was able to get 8251C running without any mention of other changes, does that mean the 228A TDC CPUs should just work out of the box?

I found some sellers and anon benchmarks showing they work with HP Z6 G4 but no successful reports for Dell 7920...

yes, TDC 228A ist standard for all SKU 165...205W , except OEMs of course.
edit:
you need actual BIOS for 2nd gens

I've got a Dell T440 that's also using PXE1610C and want to go for the 8272CL. Unfortunately I'm unable to locate the 3-Pin header.
Any hints?

First check if all VRM phases are applied, if you have a neutered motherboard then you have no chance.

Damn. Just 3 of 5 are applied. Does it mean I do have further CPU restrictions as well or would a 8160 work?
sorry, don't know. pls check if the T440 is sold with 8160s...
edit: have seen T440 sold with 205W CPU, but in that case motherboard with all 5 VRM phase applied.

I got a 7920 with BIOS 2.4.1, was booting fine with the 4110 it came with, but after I installed the 6268CL there's no video output... From what @PandaChan said there should be blinking / boot cycling when the VRM mod is needed, so that's probably not the issue right? Maybe it's the BIOS?

2.4.1 BIOS should support CLX B1

Just to confirm, shouldn't be VRM issue if it's not giving me any "bad CPU" type errors right? Power LED is going solid white and staying on after boot. Just no display.

unfotunaly i have no epxerience with 7920 and the light codes. you have to close the door(intruser).

with my 7820 i had this:

with removed door, applied CPU.
after powering the system boots up with some warnings about missing FANs.
i solved one after one and got finaly the Panel LED blinking codes with no more life.
checked the 7820 manual and found the reason: door intrusion switch open.

on VRM ICC_MAX issue no x86 code executed,
maybe you have the CPU not properly installed.

what about reinstall the 4110 and update to latest BIOS ???

I did previously have an issue with the intrusion switch which caused power LED to blink a diagnostic pattern. However I already closed the side panel, the issue is now as previously mentioned - no video output, but solid white power LED (normal state according to manual), fans running, it stays on without power off / cycling.

So 6268CL works on your 7820? Can I ask if you have a tower or rack 7820, and what version BIOS you had? Latest is 2.35.0 but it just came out Aug 9
Since I have a tower 7920 and Dell website shows 7920 and 7820 towers share a BIOS. (Racks and towers have different BIOS but seems they update at the same time often.)

I might try CMOS reset and different GPU first but if that doesn't work I can try swapping the 4110 back in and BIOS update. I just really don't want to spam downgrade/upgrade... The installation for these CPUs makes me very nervous.

no 8222CL with VRM modd and BIOS 2.29.0. never had 6268CL. to expensive, this is normaly a sign for wide compatiblility, the highcurrent CPUs are cheaper because the limited compat.

you have to turn screws 3&4 to the end(alternately only one 360 degree turn at a time),
means lift the two leaf springs up to the coolers surface.

the Gold 6268CL is reported to work on HP, for me a proof this is NOT a highcurrent TDC unit.
there must be something else preventing it from working. i.e. the 8273CL (TDC=228A,TDP=165W) is not working on supermicro X11SPA-TF, BIOS stops at code 79.

Supermicro X11DPU-G6-NI22 Rev:1.10 (Nutanix)
VRM controller PXE1610C address 50,52
ICC_MAX is already 255A, no action required.
tested with Platinum 8222CL
