r/DataHoarder says they contain 7200RPM Seagate Exos. Anyone has experience with the reliability of Exos?
Nothing special, not a huge amount of load on these guys. Went with Exos because of the relatively low power consumption / TB at the time of purchase. I have 6x of the real 16tb exos 5yr warranty I bought a few months back and 2x of the 8tb versions and all have been solid. They have been similar to the enterprise HGST drives I have.
The Newegg reviews on the Exos have an uncomfortable number of DOA drives. Any such experience with for you guys?I've been running 12TB Exos disks (X12 and X14) in my storage systems for about two years (total of 16 HDDs). I've had one fail, Seagate replaced it without fuss. They seem to be fine although they do report a fairly large number of Hardware_ECC_Recovered errors. Nope, no DOA for me except one 8tb and that was probably due to poor shipping packaging. The externals have been reported to have 3 years of warranty on the internal drives. That plus international warranty makes it a pretty brainless choice I think.
FWIW, I've read (e.g. from here), the raw value isn't necessarily an actual "error count". Some vendors apparently store information in half of the value and the number of errors in the other half or something like that. So my understanding is that the "Value", "Worst" and "Threshold" numbers are the things to look at: when the normalized and/or worst values approach the threshold value is when you need to be concerned.They seem to be fine although they do report a fairly large number of Hardware_ECC_Recovered errors.
I bought 3 Seagate 16TB HDDs at Amazon in US this year. The first one is Expansion in summer, the second one is Expansion on Cyber Monday, and the last one is Exos X16 last week.Curiously I plugged that into the Seagate warranty checker and it does indeed show warranty up till 1 Jan 2024 (3 years + 1 month) and reports it as Exos X
Where are you seeing this difference?I checked the difference between Expansion and Exos X16 with Linux "lshw" command, and the version of both Expansion drives is SN02, and one of Exos X16 is SN03.
Is your bare Exos ST16000NM001G-2KK103 as well?

I hope so, but I cannot guarantee what happens when it is broken within the warranty.so we can take the drives out of the enclosure and the warranty is still valid?

At least, the serial number of the bare drive was accepted through product registration at seagate.com, and it says, "WARRANTY: Valid till 19/Jan/2024".
