Since this is a new technology from Microsoft we might have a few questions regarding them, so I thought it would be a good idea to have a thread where we could gather them instead of having them spread across the forum.

I'll start off with some basic ones.

What is the difference between a "storage space" and a "storage pool"?

- A storage pool is a collection of disks that can be used for storage.
- A storage space is a partitioned segment of those drives that shows up with its own drive letter.

Can you rename the drives in a pool?

- Yes, after you have added a drive to a pool you can rename it to whatever you want.

What resiliency does it support.

- No resiliency
- Two-way mirroring
- Three-way mirroring
- Parity (think Raid-5-ish)

How big can a storage pool be?

- Microsoft says that they've tested storage pools with hundreds of drives.

How big can a storage space be?

- In Windows 8 they're limited to 63TB.
- Unknown if it's the same in the Server version.

When you need to replace one hard drive with another, does the new hard drive get renamed to the name of the original drive?

- Unknown

What speeds can it deliver?

- Depends on your resiliency, atm I'm maxing out my 1Gbit/s lan when copying large files from one computer to the server. Different speeds depending on whether it's big or small files, big files offers faster speeds.

What changes can you make to an existing storage pool?

If the storage pool has a storage space:
- You can add drives
- You can not remove drives
- You can not delete the storage pool

If the storage pool does not has a storage space:
- You can add and remove drives
- You can delete the storage pool

What changes can you make to an existing storage space?

- You can change name, drive letter and increase the size of it.
- You can not reduce the size of it or change the resilience of it.
- Can you replace a drive? To be answered

Can you move the storage pool/space to a new computer?

- Yes as long as it's computer running Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012.

Can you boot from a Storage Space?

- No
