I am wondering if somebody can recommend a chassis for SSD storage nodes. I am trying to build a 2 node cluster to store my VMs. I already have the SSDs purchased and I am looking for an economical chassis to put them in without breaking the bank.

I do have spare infiniband cards laying around so in terms of networking I should have that covered. However, it it comes with built in infiniband (that would be a huge bonus) then I can save the PCI slot for something else :)

Just a bare chassis, no JBOD controller but those can be really cheap or $100 for one too depending on which mode you get.

The 2nd gen jbod boards can be had for $10-$12 on eBay all the time. I have a few of them I picked up for $10/EA.

@CyberSkulls yeah but the $100 one is a lot more "controllable" hehe, especially nice for SSD but does add a chunk to cost.

I know the one your talking about. I wanted one when the first came out then I saw the price and said hell to the no! I put a cheap AM1 board in instead. I'm a cheap ass :)

Will the SCE-216 support a X10SDV? That looks like a fair price, and includes trays but no rails.

I was considering this 2U 24 bay 2.5 Supermicro Superchassis SC216E16-R1200LPB with PS Rail Kit | eBay for my X10SDV-4C-7TP4F. The MrRackables appears to have additional x2 trays in back, rails, and only one PS for about $120 more.

Expander Chassis = not best for SSD.

Non-Expander 216 = more $ and harder to find, keep that in mind when shopping :)

The rear 2.5" is nice if you have capacity to plug them in.

Last year $275 from MrRackables was getting that chassis but with Platinum PSU not cheaper Gold model. I got 6 of that model last year at once from them and price went down per-unit so be sure to negotiate.

All depends on what those rails and single power supply is worth to you. Keep in mind rails can be had for $50 used on eBay or. Light brand new directly from Newegg. Newegg is typically $72 or so but often run a $10 coupon code on those. I bought all my sets there for $62 shipped.
