Sorry this is my fault. I suppose to ask. Can you use any hard drives or they need to be Lenovo certified?

Why is that? Just because of the hard drive trays?
The price (last week Fri/Sat) was 799.99
By Tues, it had gone up 50 bucks to 849.99
Today, it's up another 50 bucks to 899.99

This will be my 3rd time ordering, delivery is set for tomorrow

Nothing like ordering vaporware

lenovo just uses lsi megaraid controllers (in some configs). they use the same FRU as the IBM ala M5015 or M5110 etc. just cheaper! lol.

I was thinking of getting one server with 10 intel X520's so I could get half off on the options. Maybe I could sell that to a potential customer

That is really a super deal. Figure $300 for that processor. $20 for the 4GB DIMM. Seller is Lenovo. That means about $360 for the chassis, PSU and motherboard.

The big question is in terms of how much redundant PSUs and etc. cost. I do like that it has some full-height expansion slots though.

E5-2620 is a Hex core Processor although at 2 GHz, and I would wager is faster than the L5639 for most tasks.

Supermicro DP LGA2011 is generally 18 Dimm slots unless you go the unusual EE-ATX format.

Excerpt from PDF specs linked earlier:
20 DIMM sockets – up to 320GB1
- RDIMM and LV RDIMM DDR3-1333
Memory DIMM
- 2G/4G/8G/16G RDIMM
- 2G/4G/8G/16G LV RDIMM
RAS: ECC, Lock step, Mirroring, Sparing
CPU 1: 12 memory slots (4 channel)
CPU 2: 8 memory slots (4 channel)

Just picked up 3 of these from amazon for my new homelab. Plan to do some vsan testing with x520s for the vsan network. Will post up a build log/review soon

Are people still doing physical DC's?
yup! I run a dl360e with the HPVSA (software smart-array) with the riser-based LSI2308 chipset and the lowest end e5 1.8ghz quad-core cpu possible. I also use the server to plug into APC units and keep the time sync'd for the entire domain. It is very frugal power wise and fully redundant for the task!

Super! I just looked at the link in the first post and they are basically $760 shipped now. I saw something about a management NIC so I'd really want to know if these had iKVM.

Sweet! Does that mean you need an add-on or is it in these inexpensive servers?

BTW - that PDF shows it is using the Mergepoint EMS which is the same as the Gigabyte IPMI solution. Very good.

awedio is correct, to enable ikvm and virtual media the tmm premium is required, ordered one from amazon here: Amazon.com: ThinkServer Management Controller Premium (67Y2624): Computers & Accessories

Installed it but haven't gotten around to playing around with it yet. This weekend I plan on doing a write up of the homelab and these servers
