you need to use HP SFP+ to fiber to brocade SFP+ to work brocade CNA with HP Procurve 2910al! Both brands restrict the brand so DAC+ cable will not work!

Thanks much for the reply mrkrad, I interpret what you say to mean:

HP 2910al out of SFP+ 10G module w/ added HP J9150A 10-GbE SFP+ SR Transceiver connected to the BR-1020 w/ an added SR transceiver (whatever supported trans that is) and an OM3 optical fiber cable between. Will that make this setup sing?

Yup!. THE SFP+ on the HP side must be compatible specifically with the 2910al (which may not be compatible with the 2920 procurve!) It is hp and brocade's annoying non-MSA compliance that requires this combination of EXPENSIVE parts!

BTW I've found random disconnects from switches caused by DAC cables that were solved by using SFP+'s and om3 fiber optics! If you buy carefully you can score cards with proper 10gbit SFP's cheap!

I've got both a set of 2920 procurve and 2910al with 10gbit slots right here if you want me to try something out!

Thx for the info, dang, I am looking at roughly $50 for the HP SR GBIC/trans and $80 for the Brocade SR GBIC/trans + abt $70 I am already into this project between the BR1020-1010 card and active 1M twinax/DAC which is now apparently useless to me. Should have just taken the Intel route :-( If I do end up taking this route am I assured that the BR1020-1010 version (which Q-Logic support tells me is the twinax/dac version) paired w/ a SR trans is gonna work in my BR1020-1010 card? I think they told me the BR1020-0010 version takes them w/out a doubt so I am unsure and want to ensure I don't order hw that simply is not compat/won't work. Could just be a scare tactic. Also on a side note, wonder why HP doesnt work and a Quanta LB4M does from what I hear? Quanta not playing the lock-in game?

The brocade docs just say 10Gbps SR SFP+ 850nm transceiver, can I go generic and get two Cisco (Cisco SFP Transceiver GBIC 850nm SFP-10G-SR 10-2415-02 or Cisco SFP Transceiver GBIC 850nm SFP-10G-SR 10-2415-03) for both ends or shall I not risk it and just pony up for the explicit brocade (Brocade 57-0000075-01 10Gb 850nm SWL SFP+ XBR-000180) transceiver and HP trans (J9150A 10-GbE SFP+ SR Transceiver) and pair accordingly to each vendor/device? Also, I can use my 1M 50 micron LC-LC fibre cable I already have laying around right?

As a side note I see on Brocade's/Q-Logic's interop matrix (http://www.qlogic.com/Resources/Doc.../brocade-adapters-interoperability-matrix.pdf) that the 10G-SFFP-USR 10-2486-01 seems to be another supported trans. So maybe these Cisco transceivers are indeed supported although it does not quite seem to be the same PN. I guess I don't understand what the heck the difference is between a Cisco SFP-10G-SR v.s. a Cisco SFP-10G-USR other than I see the second is ultra-short-range. Wonder if they will both work or if it's not even worth the trouble as I eluded to earlier?

TIA for all the help guys, I really appreciate it!

Backup plan since I have a bad taste in my mouth abt this BR-1020, just got this Intel 10Gbit XF SR LC PCI-e Server Adapter Mfr P/N E18269-001(EXPX9501AFXSR)

and this:
NEW J9150A 10-GbE SFP+ SR Transceiver %100 HP ProCurve Compatible

For roughly $100 I'm taking the optical fibre route w/ a trusted vendor far as I am concerned.

Anyone interested in my 1020 + 1 M Brocade active twinax/DAC cable, full and low height brackets, latest 3.2.4.0 FW/boot/BIOS code flashed. Make ya a REAL good deal :-D $40 and it goes to the first person to paypal me some loot, nite all and good riddance w/ this PITA card in my book heh

Sounds like a plan man! I've never had problems with optics (SFP+) but have had glitches in the matrix with DAC SFP+ cables that are unexplainable. Random interface down/up with no errors thrown with DAC SFP+ cables, switched to FIBER/SFP+ SR TRANS and all gone!

That I would not deny although there's something to be said about knowing when to cut your losses when you realize the error in your ways or if you just don't have the compatible equipment (in my case the switch/vendor lock-in games is dang near a showstopper for me) then it just made the most sense to me. I'm sure they work great w/ a Brocade turboiron/LB4M, Arista, Extreme but unfortunately my HP switch was NOT in the mood to play nice :-( Sorry for venting

Good evening sth'ers. Got my 10G transceiver for my Procurve 2910al and my Intel XF SR adapter and strangely enough (or rather maybe as to be expected) the first gen (well maybe not first but certainly an older 10G phys Intel nic generation) v.s. my X520-DA2's gets abt 65-70% throughput using iperf compared to the X520's. I can do a quick swap between a vSphere vDS vSwitch backed by each adapter and immediately see my iperf loop drop from 9Gbps to 6 Gbps roughly. I can post a vid or screenshot of it here if anyone is interested.

Thoughts?

Hello, i have been looking at this one DGS-1510-28X looks same but has 4 @ SFP+ instead of 2@sfp and 2@sfp+
I've also been looking for a good 1G switch with 10G uplinks. Main goal is to tie 2 ESXi nodes to ZFS storage at 10G and support link arrogation to boost workstation speeds.

Looking at Netgear GS728TXS, D-Link DGS-1510-28X

Both have 4 SFP+ ports but i'm not sure which i'll get yet.

While I am a a sample size of 1, I have had issues with a dlink switch, Intel nics and esxi in combination and a quick Google shows that I am not the only one. This has prompted me to get an HP 24 port (managed 1018g-24) switch.

I have seen a few of the HP 3300 series (24 with 2x10 gig uplink) with uplink modules on eBay going for relatively low prices...

Is that model fan-less? i'm seeing it on amazon used as low as 150 +8 shipping. it would be perfect but i need 1 more 10G port... might have to pick one up anyway
