Xeon E5 v3/v4 price levitation

Anyone have theories on why older E5 Xeons are still priced so high? As an example, I looked at recent E5-2690v3 (non-ES/QS) prices on feeBay and they're $1-1.5K. 16-core Threadrippers are $700 now. Newegg is listing a few 16-core Epycs at ~$800-$1000. Why are people paying up for 22nm tech when new 14nm tech is priced lower?

V4 I understand more as still lots of new systems around to use them but as you say make no sense for v3

That's the thing, there is no hope involved. They ARE selling at those prices. Must be a shortage or something...

Well intel can’t supply any longer so if people need them what choice ? And E5 v3 are not that old, still a decent amount of upgrade activities going on as systems age a couple of years and get loaded up.

May be the effect of the E5 V3 all core turbo unlock "feature" is driving the prices. Guess the large scale replacements have not hit the market yet for these. In addition, the DDR4 prices are crazy high too.

Imo, on the cost/perf mark. If on a budget stay with E5 v2, if that's to slow go Ryzen or Xeon D. If that's to slow, pay up
