I am in the process of upgrading my home-server. Currently running debian with zfs (6 disks in raidz2), using it for file-sharing, plex++, and various small services.
I am comparing the Xeon D-1520 (X10SDV-4C-TLN2F) and the xeon e3-1240Lv3 (Asrock E3C224D4I-14s)
My main focus will be to build a quiet computer, and I think both of these will have enough power for my needs. Currently I am using the xeon E5310, which is more than enough, and the 32GB memory limit won't be a problem. I have also been looking at the 2750, which I am afraid will not be powerful enough.
Looking at the TDP, the E3 is an easy winner with 25W TDP compared to 45W TDP of the Xeon D. I am however a bit confused as to whether or not these can be directly compared, give that the Xeon is a SoC. I guess there might also be differences when it comes to idling power.
My question is basically what the best choice would be with regards to heat and thus noise? I am also open for other options.
