I would also rather have x79 over x58 since there is more cpu upgrade path for higher performance. .. but cant deny that x5650 has very good performance to price ratio

well, there are those recent chinese X79 boards that are around $110-140. They have up to 4 ram slots and can probably take up to 64gb ram. X58 boards are around low $100's. But going with x79 you have more options for faster cpu whether as with x58, x5650 is about the fastest you ll be without overspending for not much more gain. If you have an old workstation that you got for real cheap or free, then it's perfect to just spend another $16 to get it to be as fast for the money. But if you were to build a cheap WS, i would go with x79...

and x58 boards are hard to come by in any decent pricing.
If you don't need to overclock (i.e. X58), then you can get a server board.

Tyan S7012 are cheap enough.. $100 shipped for a dual-1366 board. I ran one for the last 12 months with dual X5660 in it and 96GB of RAM (I had 144GB RAM in it at one point.. 18 ddr3 slots).

They have IPMI and TPM onboard too (IPMI is shared (bridge) with one of the 4 onboard network ports).

Hmm since I don’t care about power or noise this could be a viable runway.

kicking myself for selling my L5639s oh wel

Is ddr3 ECC cheap these days?
Not bad parts. But it's definitely more expensive than x5650.. I am just wondering how compatible these technology are with the latest win10 updates
