You will only be able to use half of the pcie slots if you only populate 1 socket. It is also narrow IML which ... narrows your hs choice.
If you do go that route, I would recommend a low end 2p chip.

I just need one PCI express slot for SAS HBA...My current addon cards were HBA,Intel 520-SR2 and Nvme card
So this will reduce my addon cards.

NVME AIC will hit the CPU it looks like was my concern... well, any mildly long AIC...

There are still 4 dimms per socket... just only 1dpc.
You are right. Just reduced memory capacity due to having fewer DIMM slots.

It's just strange to see so few DIMM slots on a dual processor C612 board.

$$$ Decked out Motherboard:
X10DRH-CT = Works with all NVME I've tried.

From Super micro:

Checked with our LAB and verify with BIOS engineer. X10DRI did not supportAOC-SGL3-2E4R card.

X10DRW-I and X10DRL-CT, X10DRU motherboard did support AOC-SGL3-2E4R card.

According to BIOS engineer, X10DRH motherboard did support AOC-SGL3-2E4R card.

The X10DRH is a badass motherboard but is not cheap.
X10DRH-I is way cheaper than the -CT that I have, so that may be the best way to go.

Or, if you don't need AICs that other NVME motherboard is waht I'd buy, it's in my cart/list on a couple sites.... onboard NVME + NVME AOC are short so that shuold work, I was concerend about the HBA, and other longer cards though :/

Take that with a grain of salt though, they've told me it didn't work on x9 boards at all and they do work in some.

Measure it, and look at specs for the SM board with onboard NVME, if it works that's the simplest way, and you can sell the card you got from me even :)

The board may be misleading in the 'view' online because I'm noticing some of hte boards I have look "short" too but they're not, and I have full AIC in some.

Ugh, that sucks. even the Intel NVME AIC is 6.6" approx, it may just barely fit depending if they include the bracket in measurement or not.

What about a PCIE USB Extension, and just mount the HBA where the 2.5" drives go in the 847/846 chassis ?
Ghetto, but coudl still b a clean install if done with lexan bracket, etc.
