It's not completely silent, but very quiet.
The FAN-0100L4 maxes out at 34DB @8500 RPM. In reality, if you set the fans to "optimal mode", unless the ambient temp is really high, the fan spins much slower then that and the sound level is much lower.

Sorry, but they will cost more then that.
The SYS-5018A-FTN4 has an Atom board in it and a lot less memory. That is why it is much cheaper.
The SYS-5018D-FN4T has a Xeon-D board in it. Plus they have 128GB of memory and a bunch of m.2 SSD's + an optane (VSAN test lab)
So the price for that one would be higher.

Regarding the drive cages you are correct.
Basicaly if you have no PCI-E card or a Low Profile PCI-E card installed. You should be able to fit 2x a Double drive height - MCP-220-00044-0N in there.
If you have a High Profile PCI-E card in the system. You should be able to fit 2x a Single drive height - MCP-220-00051-0N in there

FYI: the drive height referenced is 15mm. If you use 7mm SSD's or HDD's you can fit double the amount in. You wont be able to screw them to the cage but they fit, and due to the orientation of the cage and the cables. They stay put.

I do not know. It comes from one of the sites I took over a year or two ago.
It's been running rock solid. Was replaced because the client moved from PFSense to a cloud managed firewall solution to centralize the management of all the sites.

My assumption is that it's been there since the atom C25xx/C27xx boards were the new kids on the block.

For me, with the fans (FAN-0064L4) set to Optimal mode they are not very loud. You hear them a bit in the background if you listen for it.
If they spin up to the 13000 RPM max speed. Supermicro's fan matrix has them at 55DBA and you will definately know the server is there.

What’s up with these lately? I used to get them for €50 not that long ago, maybe a year or so. Why has the pricing gone up so much? Same trend on eBay. They are old Wave 2 AC, not AX, while new Mikrotik AX is only €100-ish… Not complaining, just genuinely curious

Do you know whether you may get any other Front I/O servers in? The A2SDV-8C-TLN5F would've been perfect, but seems I was too late Looking for a low power firewall server. The XeonD you mentioned may be a bit overkill for that.
