Hello - New here, although long time follow of the site. I'm looking to build a standalone zoneminder server, currently have it running as a Vm on a freenas system, although I've reached my CPU's limit. Looking at TDP of 45w or lower, and 6 core or more. I really like the xeon d series. Please let me know what you have, built or mobo only. Thanks.

6core Xeon D will be quite expensive - do you need the cores or the ram? Else higher speed /fewer cores (e3) might be cheaper.

Edit: And welcome:)

Thanks. I need actual cores, ZM is processing each frame of the cameras for differences in each frame. I found a d-1528 motherboard combo for 560.00 cheapest I've found above 4 cores so far.

Unless you need low power you can get E5 v1 or v2 + mobo cheaper with MORE cores and higher frequency for less money than that Xeon-D.

10c $125 2.2ghz

SR1AB INTEL XEON E5-2660V2 10 CORE 2.20GHz 95W PROCESSOR FOR DELL T5600 C8220 | eBay

I think I may have 1 motherboard (SuperMicro) left that accepts that CPU too, it's a 2P motherboard so you could even add a second and have 20c for about same price as that 6c Xeon-D. I actually think my motherboard has 2x E5-2660 v2 in it (ES though) even! If that interests you message me :) I could set it up with RAM too, and heat sink / fan combo too probably.

Xeon-D does not make sense for most ppl.

@T_Minus Good idea but that will not match the 45 W TDP;)

@inis Whats your target power consumption /utilization pattern? 24/7?
And 1528 is a 1.9 ghz solution - are you sure that ZM will not profit from 4 cores at 3Ghz vs 6 cores at 1.9 (+HT o/c)? I have no clue about ZM but most applications do profit from high clock since cores get freed up quicker.

A Xeon E3-1265L v3 (45W TDP) will have essentially identical performance and will wind up costing you considerably less. They're ~$200 on eBay and a board can be had for ~$100.

Yeah, exactly why I said "unless you need lower power" which he does ;) but just giving more options.

Like you said, I don't think 1.9ghz for ZM will be best.

Yeah was look for low power, running another server as well. Keep in mind the 1528 can boost to 2.5. Currently I'm running 2 core 2.3. Prefer 45w/35w/25w . As far as do i need cores vs speed, this has been long discussion on zoneminder forums. Most seem to perform better with more cores (not hyperthreading cores though) than pure speed. I'll probably run a 2tb raid 0 and mirror/backup it on my other machine. Also for whomever asked, it will be running 24/7. Current freenas box has been running for some 900 days straight.
